Food Preventative Controls Alliance Workshop Under the direction of Dr Andrea Goldson-Barnaby, the Department hosted the Safety Preventative Controls Alliance, Preventative Controls Qualified Individual Human Foods workshop; offered virtually, it was geared towards certifying food industry professionals. STAFF MOVEMENTS Two academic staff members, Dr Ainka Brown and Dr Shannen Lorraine, were added to the Department’s staff complement. The following staff members bid the Department farewell: Mr Robert Parnell and Professor Paul Reese (retired). Pro- fessor Reese was conferred with the title of Professor Emeritus for distinguished service to the University for 37 years in teaching, research and in his administra- tive capacity as Head of the Department of Chemistry and Dean of the Faculty of Science & Technology. We were saddened by the passing of Mr Wilfist Graham, former Maintenance Supervisor in the Department up to his retirement in 2006.
STAFF AND STUDENT ENGAGEMENT ACTIVITIES
Ministry of Commerce/China Training Course Several Food Chemistry undergraduate and postgraduate students received a cer- tificate after completing the “Training Course on Beer Brewing Technology for Developing Countries”, which was sponsored by the Ministry of Commerce and organized by the China National Research Institute of Food and Fermentation Industries Corporation Limited. FST Science Festival The Department mounted research displays for the inaugural staging of the Faculty of Science & Technology’s (FST) Science Festival, and treated visiting students to fun chemistry activities. In an ACS-sponsored initiative, the Department hosted 32 special needs students from the Lister Mair/Gilby and Christian Centre for the Deaf schools, who joined in the festivities on the day. Student Meet & Greet A “meet and greet” session was hosted for the Department’s level 2 and 3 undergrad- uates. Students were engaged in an interactive session with lecturers and graduate students, who introduced themselves and shared their research interests, sparking enthusiasm in our research programme.
