Their visit provided a unique platform for collaboration aimed at addressing the significant and pressing climate issues affecting the Caribbean region. One pri- mary collaborative objectives is to strengthen cooperative efforts in cli- mate research and generate fresh ideas for a sustainable Caribbean future. Researchers from Cuba were Dr. Abel Centella, Dr. Arnoldo Bezanilla and Dr. Maibys Sierra Lorenzo whilst Dr. Dimitris A. Herrera represented the University of Tennessee-Knoxville. STAFF RECOGNITION AND STUDENT AWARDS • Mr. Alton Daley was awarded a fulbright scholarship to pursue his Doctorial Degree in the United States. Mr. Daley had obtained a Bachelors of Science in Energy and Environmental Physics and a Master of Philosophy in Applied Physics from The University of the West Indies. • Professors A. Anthony Chen and Michael Taylor were nominated and short- listed for National Medal for the Science and Technology. On November 14, 2022, The Most Honourable Prime Minister Andrew Holness presented the Certificate of Recognition to Professor Taylor for his outstanding contribution to Scientific and Technological Research in the Field of Climatology in Jamaica. A Certificate of Recognition was also prepared for Prof. A. Anthony Chen. • Mrs. Rochelle Walters (Technical Staff) and Mrs. Joy Davis (Service Staff) were recipients of awards for their hard work and dedication under the theme “Unsung Hero” at the Faculty of Science and Technology’s Technical and Ser- vice Staff Appreciation Day held November 24, 2022. • Janielle McKoy (Undergraduate Student) participated in the International Hua- wei Seeds for the Future program (SFTF). The SFTF2023 cohort was selected from: Trinidad & Tobago, Peru, Suriname, Jamaica, Slovenia and China. Ms. McKoy also completed a weeklong (November 7–14, 2022) training session on 5G, Artificial Intelligence, Cloud Computing and Digital Power and was selected among the top 10 performers nationally. Ms. Mckoy was rewarded with a trip to Panama from January 13–18, 2023 for a leadership to participate in a cultural exchange of activities along with other top performers. • Deron Maitland (Postgraduate Student) departed the island on January 25, 2023 for a 5–6 month visit to the University of Bergen (UiB), Norway as an Erasmus + International Credit Mobility student. Mr. Maitland is expected to engage a Master’s level course titled “Data Analysis in Earth Sciences” in the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, UiB and also to conduct research on Caribbean Sea level change at the Bjerknes Centre for Climate Research (BCCR), UiB, Norway. This is made possible by the MOU between the UWI and UiB.
