DEPARTMENT OF SOCIOLOGY, PSYCHOLOGY AND SOCIAL WORK

CONGRATULATIONS Dr. Doreen Gordon launched her book, Blackness and Social Mobility in Brazil. This was held November 18, 2022 in the Multifunctional room at the UWI Main Library. Dr Herbert Gayle was appointed Chairman of the National Council on Education (April 1, 2023 and will serve for 3 years).

CONDOLENCES Within the last academic year the Department lost 3 stalwarts: Dr. John Maxwell, retired Head of Department – August 2022

Professor Chukwudum Uche, Retired professor of Demography – January 2023 Dr Wendy McLean Cooke, 6 months after completing her PhD and returning to the Social Work Unit – February 2023 EXTERNAL COLLABORATION • In June 2023, Doreen Gordon collaborated with Dr. Ainhoa Montaya of the University of London to source funding from the British Academy to host an International Workshop on Writing. • The Department continues its collaboration with the School of Global Stud- ies, University of Gothenburg, Sweden. Prof. Maria Clara visited the Western Campus (WJC) and had a tour of Montego Bay on Friday April 21, 2023. • The Social Work Unit and Food for the Poor (FFTP) collaborated to assist members of the Zion community. Using PLA methodology, the Social Work team comprised of undergraduate and postgraduate past students and lecturers aimed to help FFTP transition from welfare to development work. • The Demography sub-unit collaborated with the UNFPA on a Data Appreci- ation Project. The conceptual framework for population data appreciation in the English and Dutch Caribbean was validated with regional experts and national representatives and was subsequently finalized in December 2022. • Ties with the University of Southern Oregon were established through Associate Professor – Dr. Larry Gibbs (a former student of the Department) and Drs. Priestley and Devonish. It was proposed that a minimum of 10 students and 3 Faculty members attend UWI during the summer over a two-week period, speak with officials at the US Embassy, Government of Jamaica, and parlia- mentarians to provide them with an understanding of Caribbean Society and the state of Democracy within island states.
