DEPARTMENT OF SOCIOLOGY, PSYCHOLOGY AND SOCIAL WORK
SCHOOL ENGAGEMENT Dr Orville Beckford organized and presented free workshops in CAPE Sociol- ogy, Management of Business and Caribbean Studies on Campus for high schools students. This is in an effort to improve the quality of students coming into the sociology and other programmes at UWI Mona. Miss Rashalee Mitchell represented the Department at the Convent of Mercy, Academy ‘Alpha’ at their Career Fair held at the school on March 9, 2023. At this Career Fair, she engaged with some sixth form students about our programmes with focus on our unit offerings. Tentative arrangements were made with the relevant staff at the school to facilitate a SPSW team visit with the sixth form students to further promote our unit offerings. The Department started the semester with recruitment exercises to grade 13 students at St. Andrew High School and Wolmer’s Trust High School for Girls. Drs. Moji Anderson, and Julian Devonish along with Mrs. Kimberly Hinds-Heron promoted our programmes on September 22 and 23. DISTINCTIONS, HONOURS, SCHOLARSHIPS AND AWARDS Dr Andre Bateman • Received the Principal’s Research Award for Most Outstanding Research for 2021–2022 publishing 11 articles (July, 2023). • International Book Awards Finalist in Health and Alternative Medicine Category 2023. “Traditional and Western Medicine – Voices from Jamaican Psychiatric Patients” Mrs. Arna Elliott-Rattray • Outstanding teaching accomplishment in the academic year 2021/2022. Center for Excellence in Teaching April 26, 2023 • Special Award from University Council of Jamaica for working to create the Standards for Social Work Education in Jamaica. Dr Herbert Gayle • Received Stakeholder Appreciation and Recognition Award (SARA), US Embassy, Jamaica for work in violence reduction in Jamaica with special emphasis on gender justice for boys (December 2022) • Children First Long Service Award for 25 years of service.
