OCTOBER 2022 − CI staff, including Principal Webber, attended the China National Day reception at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel. − CI staff attended a reception celebrating 50 years of diplomatic relations between China and Jamaica at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel. − 18 th October – symposium on China-Jamaica relations organized by the Jamaica China Friendship Association and the Chinese Embassy at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel. CI staff in attendance. NOVEMBER 2022 − Proposed Confucius Institute Board Meeting cancelled. − A new vehicle purchased from ATL for the Chinese Director’s use. − Chinese Ambassador’s Scholarship, valued at JMD $200,000.00 each, issued to 15 UWI students. Among recipients were 10 students of Mandarin. These were handed out in the Dan Qing Gallery.
SEMESTER I
JANUARY 2023 − On January 4, Mr. Zhao Xurui, Mandarin teacher, arrived in Jamaica. − Staff and students of the Confucius Institute attended the Chinese Embassy’s Spring Festival reception for the Year of the Rabbit. There was a performance by the Mandarin students. − The Confucius Institute hosted its own Spring Festival reception in the Dan Qing Gallery. It was well attended. Guests included the Deputy Principal, Chinese Ambassador and Dean of the FHE. − Pre-university classes for students of Mandarin started at the CI. There were 400 students in total, twice weekly for eight weeks. − There was a further eight-week extension for the top 10 students from the pre-university group. − On January 30, community Mandarin classes commenced. Duration: 10 weeks, with 6 students. Among the 6 students, one was subsequently employed by the Chinese Embassy.
