RCO also received a grant which supported the visit to Jamaica and The UWI, of the United Nations’ Special Rapporteur on Indigenous Peoples Rights, Mr. José Fransisco Cali Tzay. Other highlights for the AY included the work done on gender mainstreaming to include presentations of the revised UWI Gender Policy (2022) to campus Academic Boards and to the University’s F&GPC. Work was also done with Campus Principals to advice on the creation of the campus Gender Task Forces to enact the Gender Policy on each campus.

ACCESS

TEACHING, LEARNING & STUDENT DEVELOPMENT The RCO offered the following degrees in Gender & Development Studies during the AY: a post Graduate Diploma; an M.Sc., an MPhil; and a PhD. Seven graduate courses were offered via Zoom, and were delivered by Drs. Dalea Bean and Nata- sha Mortley, Carol Watson-Williams and Warren Thompson, as well as faculty from the IGDS – Nita Barrow (NBU), St. Augustine, and Mona Units and Adjunct Lecturers. Thirty-Four students were enrolled in the combined programmes for the AY: 20 MSc which included five new students, 11 MPhil and 3 PhD students. Seven students graduated in November 2022: Beverley Josephs (MPhil), Nadeen Spence (PhD with high commendation), Cynthia Pitter (PhD), Kyisha Patterson (MSc with distinction), Soba Pepple (MSc), Helen Atkins (MSc) and Stacey Palmer (MSc with distinction). PhD candidate Warren Thompson successfully defended his thesis and was officially awarded his PhD in August 2023. Access was increased through online course delivery, which facilitated registration of students from The UWI- Mona-Western Jamaica Campus, and the IGDS-Nita Barrow Unit. There were also advances in the development of the online MSc in Gender and Development which was shared regionally for review, and the Graduate Certificate Programme which was submitted to the Board of Graduate Studies and Research for approval. The Institute continued to provide developmental support to students registered in the RCO and the regional Units. One graduate seminar was held on May 15, 2023, for IGDS-RCO MPhil/PhD candidates to present and receive feedback on their theses. The regional ‘IGDS Workshop Series for Graduate Students’, conceptualised and led by Dr. Dalea Bean, continued to provide support to the students on various topics including: Critical Reading, Writing a Literature Review, Building Skills in Academic Writing, and Data Collection.
