INVESTEC SA OPEN PREVIEW

WESTERN CAPE RETURN PROMISES LARGE CROWDS

S TELLENBOSCH GOLF CLUB looks every bit as if it will suc- cessfully play the part of a pre- mier championship course leading up to its hosting of a second Investec SA Open from February 26 to March 1. It hasn’t always been recognised as such, but the layout has been magically transformed into one over the past year. It looks highly likely that Stellen- bosch will become the Western Cape’s first choice of SA Open venue mov- ing into the future. It ticks most of the boxes that both the Sunshine Tour and DP World Tour ask of a modern tourna- ment venue. There are few other serious candi- dates in the region, mainly because there is no appetite for hosting the Open and its large crowds at residen- tial estates, which would disqualify the likes of Pearl Valley, Erinvale and De Zalze. And Royal Cape, once home to 10 SA Opens, the last in 1996, just doesn’t have the space. Stellenbosch Golf Club epitomises everything required of a modern Open venue. BY STUART MCLEAN
