The Rt Rev. Dr Peter Carrell, 9th Bishop of Christchurch, 10th Warden of Christ’s College

Professor Robin Jon Hawes Clark, FRS

Ordained Bishop of Christchurch in February 2019, Peter Carrell has dedicated his life to service in the Anglican Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand and Polynesia. Since 2010, his ministry has focused on the Diocese of Christchurch. After completing a BSc in Mathematics at the University of Canterbury, Peter studied Theology at Knox Theological Hall, Dunedin, which is where he was called to vocational ministry. He was ordained deacon 1986, priest 1987, and served his curacy in Christchurch, before moving to England to pursue his doctorate in New Testament studies at Durham University (1990–1993). Back in New Zealand, Peter served as a parish priest and theological educator in the Diocese of Nelson, returning to Christchurch in 2010 to take up senior diocesan roles. Peter is a well-known preacher and teacher, motivated by his deep Christian faith and shaped by his theological explorations. He describes his ministry as a privilege and a responsibility, and thrives on the challenge of being bishop at a time of great transition for the church.

A brilliant student who became an esteemed international scientist. Professor Robin Clark pioneered a dating technique that authenticated a Vermeer painting, and exposed an ancient map as a forgery. From Rangiora, he won a scholarship to College, where he excelled academically. He went on to become a world authority on titanium. Much of his life was spent at University College, London, where his dogged, unflashy leadership was much admired. Robin joined the Chemistry department in 1962, was made Professor of Chemistry in 1982 and seven years later, Head of Chemistry. His research was key to Raman spectroscopy becoming a practical tool for art historians and chemists. In 2002 it enabled him to expose the Vinland Map as a clever forgery. Awarded countless international honours, he was made FRS in 1990. Ten bound volumes of his published papers are held in the College library. Robin passed away in 2018, aged 83 years.

College No. 13463

Alexander (Alex) David Daniel Reese

Alex Reese is the founder and chairman of the Cricket Live Foundation, which uses cricket to develop the life skills and education of underprivileged children in Sri Lanka and India. A good scholar and leg spinner, who played in the 1st XI for four years, Alex didn’t foresee his passion leading to a career on another continent. The seed was planted in 2008 when he toured India as part of a New Zealand Secondary Schools’ team and consolidated when he returned to Mumbai at 18. He saw the huge need of those who struggled with schooling but loved sport, and decided to marry the two to improve their general education and ongoing quality of life. Alex opened the first Cricket Live centre for 48 boys at Moratuwa, Sri Lanka, in 2014. The foundation now operates six centres in Sri Lanka and India, working with 675 children. Alex now lives in London, where he works in sports management, commerce and marketing.
