College – Issue 38

During the evening, after a fine speech by our Head Prefect Jonny Sharr, we toasted those who could not be there to join the Class of 1990 at our reunion – in particular, the growing number of our friends who are no longer with us. They are missed. The 30 Years On reunion was a very successful weekend, with Old Boys travelling from all over New Zealand, and as far afield as Toronto, Canada. We do hope even more Old Boys will take the opportunity to mark in their diaries February 2030 for our 40 Years On. A large thank you to former CCOBA Secretary Justine Nicholl and Alumni Manager Lizzie Dyer, without whom this weekend wouldn’t have happened, as well as Executive Principal Garth Wynne for hosting us. My thanks also to Dave Clouston, Hamish Jenkins and Guy Evans for assisting in the muster. Also, special thanks to Guy and his family for hosting us at their family restaurant. As the world keeps moving at a rate of knots, Christ’s College continues to evolve, which it must to stay relevant. But nothing remains more consistent than the great traditions and values College stands for and the foundation it helps provide its young men.

from Sydney and throughout New Zealand. Many of us selected a variety of events across the range on offer. One of the highlights at the lunch was Mark Armstrong leading the school song with enthusiasm and conviction. Later, at the dinner on Saturday night, Mark again led the haka in the dining room at the Christchurch Golf Club. There were many photos taken by our wives and partners of most of us stumbling through the basics, rather badly! Personally and surprisingly, I found attending Chapel and singing with over 700 mainly males quite emotional and uplifting. A select few of us slipped into the city for more talk, drinks and dinner, still keen to chat and catch up on life, business, family and kids. It always surprises me how we Old Boys drop back into our relationships with such ease and comfort. The nicknames roll off the tongue as do the usual insults, which are enduring and endearing. From a personal observation, the 50 Year On group looked in great health and good spirits, and I am sure we will meet again in 10 years. Spread the word.
