for the job of group accountant, in charge of the money and keeping to the all-important budget. He learnt a lot. “When we got there we were given a sum of money and we needed to budget for everything – travel costs, accommodation, meals and food. I worked out dinners would be really cheap, about 10 ringgits each. One time we all sat for an hour working out what accommodation we could afford.” He needn’t have worried. At the end of the trip there was surplus money and the group split it to spend on souvenirs in the markets. The highlight of the tour for Richard was seeing orangutans and sun bears – all rescued animals – in a huge enclosure where they were free to roam and feed, the College group viewing them from a walkway in the treetops. A low point was discovering leeches feeding happily on his leg and stomach. “You don’t feel them because they numb the area, so it’s a shock to see the blood.”
“ Watching these young men develop was a revelation. The purpose of the trip was to give them the challenge of organising it themselves, running it themselves and learning from the experience. ” Graeme Christey
