College – Issue 38

“We got beaten, but we got one try each.” Hanging out with all Alberto’s Spanish friends was ranked one of the best experiences for the New Zealanders, and Alberto says the two Kiwis “fitted in really well.” One of the first things the boys did on arrival was spend a few days swimming in the Med and enjoying messing about on his uncle’s boat. Sightseeing included visits to Málaga’s Moorish fortress palace Alcazaba and famous cathedral, Granada’s historic Alhambra palace, and the city of Jaén, where Alberto’s grandmother lives. The Spanish food was a hit with the Kiwis, especially ensaladilla rusa, a mix of potatoes, tomato, mayonnaise and tuna. “It’s always good to eat the food at home again, although the food here is very good. I love the meat here,” says Alberto. Seeing his family – his parents, two younger brothers, an older sister and grandparents – is always a highlight of trips home, but Alberto happily juggles life in two hemispheres. He is keeping an eye on Spanish rugby and would love to be called up for the U18 Spanish side.
