Bede’s College B and St Andrew’s College. In the play-offs, College won their quarter-final match over SBHS B by 17–2. The semi-final match – a narrow loss to CBHS by 5–8 – was followed by a very tight double penalty shoot-out loss of 14–15 to Burnside High School to claim 4th. This term, the senior team played only four of the six rounds in their competition before it was interrupted. The team had a 15–3 win over St Bede’s Development and a 13–3 win over CBHS, before losing to a very impressive St Bede’s A side. Matches against StAC and Burnside were not played. College water polo players Jacob Clements and Moe Gath, plus recent Old Boy Louis Clark, were recognised at the Canterbury Water Polo 2019 prize-giving. Jacob picked up the award for U14 boys Most Valuable Player, while Moe took U16 boys Most Valuable Player and U18 boys most improved, and Louis was awarded the U21 Most Valuable Player and Southern Cross Player of the Year. Jacob and Sam Chittock were members of the Canterbury U14 team that took silver at nationals.

Other sporting achievements

Guy Roadley competed in the flatwater kayak nationals with some very good results. Racing in the U16 grade he had a number of top 10 placings, including 3rd in New Zealand in both the U16 K4 200m and 500m events. The national secondary school triathlon championships were held in Wanaka this term, with two College athletes competing. Ben Crawford finished 20th in the U13 grade, while Art Aitken raced in the U14 grade. Art had a very good race in windy conditions, claiming 2nd place and silver, only one minute behind the winner from Palmerston North Boys’ High School.

Maunganui. He took gold in the U14 male board race, an event he also won at the Canterbury and South Island championships.

Jack Drage has been competing in the summer road cycling scene and has enjoyed some recent success. In the Round the Bays race he was 3rd overall in the event and 1st U19 rider, and in the Canterbury road cycling U19 championships, Jack was 1st in the road race and 3rd in the time trial. And finally, Matty Hickman splashed and paddled his way to a national title at the New Zealand junior surf life saving championships held at Mount
