STAFF FAREWELLS Farewell Justine Nicholl

From teenagers to centenarians, from

When she started, in 2012, the CCOBA office was off site beneath the Uniform Shop on Gloucester Street. It later moved to the Hare Memorial Building and then to the Tower Block, alongside Careers and Development. Now it is part of Advancement. Justine initially took on a part- time role, tasked with conducting “a stocktake” and presenting her findings to the committee. With Don Hamilton’s College! as her bible she immersed herself in College history and “quickly realised what a small place Christchurch is.” As she delved into the history of the Association, founded in 1877, she discovered to her surprise that her ancestor Archibald Johnston

was number 38 on the School List. His father James, a carpenter, built College’s first classrooms on the St Michael & All Angels church site. From golf tournaments and rugby matches, to reunion weekends, to branch gatherings, to the creation of Chapel windows, Justine – through her buoyant personality and exceptional skills – brought the spirit of the College community to the fore. A strong advocate for the Old Boys, she initiated the now annual Gentlemen’s Lunch and, following Executive Principal Garth Wynne’s lead, set up a Past & Long-Serving

teaching staff to visiting guests, Justine Nicholl could talk to them all, her effervescent personality making her a perfect fit for the role of secretary of the Christ’s College Old Boys’ Association (CCOBA). For eight years she forged relationships within and between members of the association, enhancing its profile both within and without, and establishing the CCOBA firmly in the heart of the College community – all delivered with her typical upbeat sense of humour and fun.

Staff Lunch. She also helped introduce Community Visits around the country.
