“God has not called you to an easy life, but He has called you to a victorious one.” – Brian Baker

3

Letter from the Executive Dean Word of Life Bible Institute Dear Students,

Congratulations, class of 2024! What a great year it has been.

We spent time in chapel focusing on our theme for the year, “Resilient: 1 Corinthians 15:57–58”. We understand that Jesus gives us the victory and that in Him, we can “…be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.” God has not called you to an easy life, but He has called you to a victorious one! The words of Paul to Timothy (2 Timothy 2:1–2) ring in my ears as I challenge you to take the things you have heard, been taught, witnessed, and experienced over the last year here at Word of Life and pass them on. Wherever life takes you, there will be people who need to know Jesus as their Savior and grow in their walk with Him. You and I have the privilege and responsibility to be used by God to teach others. Look for your Timothy and allow God to use you to impact their life. You are a part of the Word of Life family now. Please let me or one of our team members know if there is a way we can serve or encourage you. Don’t be a stranger. Stay in touch. We look forward to seeing you back for a visit soon.

May God richly bless you on your journey!

Because of Grace,

Brian Baker Vice President of Bible Institutes

“As an international student from Aruba, it was hard being in a culture outside of my own. However, I knew there were staff that would always be available to talk to, whether about school and ministry, or even just about life and my own spiritual walk. I always left feeling encouraged after spending time with a staff member. I experienced genuine care and love from the staff at Word of Life Bible Institute, and the Lord used them to be a blessing and encouragement to me and my time as a student.”

My soul boasts in the Lord; let the humble hear and be glad. Oh, magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt His name together!

Psalm 34:2–3

14

words of wisdom

from the student life department

15

“Proverbs 3:5-6 says this: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths.” My word of wisdom for you is trust. Trust in the good and gracious God who sent His Son to restore a relationship with you. Trust in the sovereignty of the Lord who sees you and knows your future. Trust in God who is a man of His Word and will always love you. Cast yourself in full dependence into the arms of a trustworthy Father. In doing so, you will find life abundant.”

Drew Burtis Dean of Students

“We will always make time for what is important to us.

As we look at Christ’s life in the Gospels, one of the things that sticks out is how often He prioritized time alone with the Father. If Christ made this a priority, how much more should we? Billy Graham was asked if he had any regrets in life, and he said yes. He wished he had spent more time praying and studying the Bible and less time traveling and taking speaking engagements. He also said he wished he had spent more time telling the Lord how much he loved Him. You will never regret the time spent alone in His presence, but you will later regret the opportunities you missed with Him. Choose to follow Jesus’ example and spend time with the Father and in His Word. We always make time for what is important to us.”

Karen Smith Dean of Women

“Class of 2024! As you graduate, I want to remind you of one of the very first chapels you attended as a student this year. Mr. Brian Baker was speaking on the importance of God’s Word and said, ‘If you don’t make time in God’s Word of first importance, it will be the first thing to go once you leave this place.’ Remember that charge. Staying close to the Word of God is staying close to the God of the Word. Let it be the lamp to walk by and the light to illuminate your path (Psalm 119:105).”

Justin Cousins Dean of Men

16

“The most liberating thing about being in Christ is the opportunity to live for someone besides yourself. Before Christ, we were slaves to selfishness, but the gospel has given us the ability to live for Christ. So, live in that freedom. Walk by the Spirit, make the gospel your constant meditation, and share the hope you have in Christ with those around you. Be faithful, be obedient, and be steadfast.”

Becca Allard Resident Director of Europe and Argentina

“And so a precious chapter of life comes to a close! How sweet it is that each of you will move forward from a little town in the Adirondacks, dispersing into all corners of the globe with the truth you’ve gained to reach the nations! One day, you will come back together and swap stories of how the Lord redeemed sinful people like you to accomplish His greatest purposes. While you wait, what sort of people ought you to be but people whose hearts are wholly His (2 Peter 3:11, 2 Chronicles 16:9)? It will require humility, patience, and trust, but He has equipped you and it will be worth it. If you will commit to living as though He undeniably always does what is best for us, you will know true contentment, and life with Jesus will be our greatest satisfaction and treasure.”

Jess Webel Resident Director of Asia and England

“A piece of wisdom I strive to live by is simply that God’s will for our lives is our sanctification (1 Thessalonians 4:3). If we truly grasp and believe this, then we will see every single circumstance in life as an act of grace from God to push us toward that goal. Therefore, lean into His gracious refinement no matter how difficult, trusting that in the end you will look more like Jesus!”

Stephanie Magana Resident Director of Adirondack Hall

17

“Taking naps and eating snacks is biblical. Don’t be afraid to take a break in ministry!”

Justin “Spud” Dorough Resident Director of Hungary, Chile, and South America

“When you graduate from Word of Life Bible Institute, it is our prayer that you’ll prioritize solid biblical teaching in a local church, establish a routine for Quiet Time, and spend quality time talking to God. These things are important, but I would also challenge you to remember the value of biblical community as well. While all of the ministry experiences and Bible study were absolutely essential to your spiritual growth this past year, your spiritual growth was also due to the intense biblical community you experienced. Shared burdens, group prayer, vulnerable testimonies, swapped Quiet Times, sins confessed, and shared experiences of everyday life were all vital to your growth. As Ephesians 4:16b aptly explains, ‘As each part does its own special work, it helps other parts grow, so that the whole body is healthy and growing and full of love.’

For further encouragement, see 1 Peter 4:8–11, 2 Corinthians 6:11, and Acts 2:41–47. Then go build community! It can be as simple as inviting someone to dinner.“

DOCTOR

“I have been teaching at Word of Life in New York and Hungary for the past 23 years. Many things have changed over all these years but the one thing that hasn’t – and the reason I love coming to Word of Life, New York – is the desire of you as students to learn the Word and apply it to your lives. If I was to start my Christian life all over again, I would definitely spend my years right after high school at a Bible College. I’m glad you chose to do the same. Your time here at Word of Life will serve as a base for your Christian life and service. You will need to keep learning and growing, but a firm foundation is so important. Despite all you’ve learned here, you will probably leave with many questions but that is okay. The Christian life is a wonderful life of exploring, learning, and discovering a depth to the Bible that you didn’t know was there. You will be discovering answers and truths for the rest of your life. Our world is going in the wrong direction in so many ways and lacking hope in so many circumstances. The Word of God is the correction to that direction, and our faith in Jesus Christ is the hope for our future. God knew what would happen in the far future when He gave His writers His Words to record. So God’s Word is relevant and valuable for your life today. Don’t allow yourself to drift from His Word. It is the Truth and shows us the Way to Life.”

1

Drew Burtis

PROFESSOR

“Students,

It has been an honor to be one of your professors this year. I loved the energy and enthusiasm that you exuded both in the classroom and on campus. It was contagious. Your desire for spiritual growth and community building was a joy for me to participate in. In my own life, God continues to reveal His faithfulness in all things. I know we say that God is Sovereign, but it continually blows me away to see all things working according to His perfect plan. I am learning to believe it more and more. Over the course of this year, I have increasingly learned humility as I teach. I am just as much a student of the Word of God as the Bible Institute students I teach. The fact that God can use me in this way brings me back to His feet in praise. My encouragement to you is to continue to be humble students of the Word of God whatever your next step is. Trust in His faithfulness in all things, including your own life. And may the joy of God’s salvation drive you to grow in your walk with Him more and more. May you make much of Jesus wherever He takes you!

Blessings!”

2

Ben Gutierrez

DOCTOR

“I reluctantly embraced the moment I parted ways with you all – an exceptional class of Sophomores – as you were truly memorable for your passion and conviction for the Word of God and to live out the applications of the Book of Philippians. During my time with you, I challenged you to continually “grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 3:18). Now, you must go into the field of life and execute God’s game plan for your lives! I remind you of our “ten huddles” and that you are my “joy and crown (i.e. victor’s crown)” (Philippians 4:1) as long as you live out God’s Word long after our time studying Philippians has concluded.

I leave you now with these two biblical encouragements:

‘Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling’ (Philippians 2:12) ‘Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel’ (Philippians 1:27)

… I can’t wait to hear how the Lord has used you for His glory in the years to come!”

3

Dwight Peterson

DOCTOR

“There is no way I could overstate the influence Word of Life Bible Institute has had on Bonnie’s and my lives. We came as high school sweethearts, fully intending to finish the year. Then I would head to Virginia for college to eventually become a math teacher and basketball coach. We graduated, with me heading to Michigan to get further education to serve in vocational ministry as a Pastor. The trajectory of our lives changed that year at Word of Life Bible Institute. Teaching your Sophomore class was a highlight of our year. It is a humbling privilege to be part of what God is doing in the lives of students and play a role like the professors our year did. It is fun to teach students eager to learn. It is rewarding to interact with students during breaks and meals, hearing their questions and listening to their dreams for how God will use them. This motivates us to remain faithful. Students, never lose the wonder of what God has in store for your lives. Never forget that a God who would provide for your forgiveness would never make a choice for your life that is not motivated by His love and desire for you to live the abundant life Jesus said He would provide. Though you might not be able to see it in the moment, remember, ‘Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.’ (Galatians 6:9) ”

4

Loren Reno

LT. GENERAL

“Dear Bible Institute Class of 2024,

I write to add my voice to the chorus of those congratulating you for completing a second year of the prestigious and valuable Word of Life Bible Institute program. What a significant accomplishment! By the time you read this, I expect that your memory of my teaching will have faded given all the other events and requirements of this final semester: snow camps, basketball games, meals, classes, papers, exams, and the bigger-than-life resident professors you have enjoyed like the Lough brothers. I’m fine with you forgetting me in favor that you remember some of the things we discussed in class, about which you so eloquently wrote, and of which you found consistency in Scripture. Truly, we can lead God’s way and succeed in man’s world though remembering that ‘this world is not my home, I’m just a-passin’ through,’ and also that we want to be laying ‘up treasure in heaven where moth and rust don’t corrupt and where thieves don’t break through and steal.’ Were you to ask me to remind you of one thing we discussed in class, I would go back to our discussions of serving and leading God’s way, of seeking to serve, and of grounding yourself in and living your life according to God’s Word.

Know the Word of God and the God of the Word. He is all I need!”

5

Britney Sewall

PROFESSOR

“Do you remember writing your Personal Mission Statement during Week 1? My challenge to you then was that you would keep that statement in the forefront of your mind and be able to say, ‘Yes, I stayed true to my mission,’ at the end of the year.

So… how did you do?

As you complete your first year at Word of Life, I trust you feel more confident not only in your writing but in your overall ability to effectively communicate from a biblical worldview. As we discussed from An Introduction to Christian Worldview, ‘Our worldview determines our values. It helps us interpret the world around us. It sorts out what is important and what is not, what is of highest value from what is least’ (Walsh and Middleton, qtd. in Anderson et al 38). Based on our goals from Research and Writing, my challenge to you now is this:

Organize your time carefully to value the Word.

Think critically to value discernment.

Communicate effectively to value your identity as a believer.

Research properly to value truth.

Your organization, thinking, communication, and research will always be influenced by your world- view and will ultimately reveal what you value the most.

Stay on mission. Stay true to a biblical worldview. Stay close to Jesus.

I am so proud of you.”

6

Kristopher Stout

PROFESSOR

“Dear Word of Life Bible Institute class of 2024,

Teaching you all was a highlight of my year! Disciple making is such a powerful truth and tool. It was one of the things that made my time as a student at Word of Life so life changing. I saw young men and women actively making disciples of the next generation, and then that next generation doing the same. Watching ‘the lights come on’ in many of your eyes, interacting with you during and in-between classes, and especially hearing about how some of you are already putting what you have learned into practice was a massive encouragement to me. It reminded me that Jesus’ strategy really is the only one that works. It also reminded me that God’s will for us is not something so much that we find, but something that we do. You were discovering this during class. God is calling you to obey Him now, not one day far off in the future. That is my reminder to each of you. The will of God is not what is NEXT. It is what is NOW. Don’t get caught up in worrying about what comes next in your life. Be faithful in the little that He gives you today (Luke 16:10-11), and He will take care of your tomorrow (Matthew 6:33-34). Jesus could come back today! All your plans and worries for the future won’t matter. Instead, will He find you doing what He asked of you, today?

Blessings!”

“I had the privilege of being a Resident Assistant this year and believe it was definitely that experience which grew me towards God the most. Through the unique discipleship opportunities I had as a part of the role, the Lord never failed to teach me lessons and point me towards Christ in loving others well and living out the gospel. I am so grateful for the relationships I was able to build through the position. Having this special view of student life, I could see the intention behind our environment and am grateful for how the student body strove to encourage one another in their walks with Jesus.” – Kirsi Vasara

About Davis College...

Davis College is a Bible-centered institution with a focus on local church ministry and intensive disciple-making. It offers associate and bachelor’s degrees for students seeking to further their education grounded in Scripture and biblical truth. At Davis College, students can earn a Bachelor of Religious Education (BRE) while specializing in a specific area of concentration. Students at Davis College have the unique opportunity to share a campus with Word of Life Bible Institute students. This allows for both student bodies to serve alongside one another in ministries like Word of Life Reverb, Snowcamp, Summer Camp, and even some Huskies athletics teams. The shared campus of Davis College and Word of Life Bible Institute fosters an environment of teamwork, discipleship, learning, and growth built on Christ-centered service as each student learns how they can be used to minister to the world.

OPENING WEEKEND

65

First Steps in the Year of a Lifetime As early as 9:00 AM on Friday, September 8, students of the 2023/24 school term began registration to officially enter the next year of their lives. Students were greeted with an energized and excited welcoming committee comprised of Leadership students ready and looking forward to serving and learning alongside the rest of the student body. The open house format of registration provided freedom throughout the process, as it gave students a choice to commence the year by moving into the dorms and meeting their new roommates or working through final paperwork and ID photos first. Later in the night, students and their families were invited to attend the Welcome Session where, Don Lough, Jr., the Chancellor of the Bible Institute and the President & CEO of Word of Life Fellowship, introduced the theme of the academic year: resilience. Leading with the question, “What will it take to run and live with resilience this year?” Dr. Lough broke down what a year lived with faithful resilience looks like for a student at the Bible Institute and encouraged students to strive for just that – a life of steadfastness and growth in their relationship with and dependence on the Lord. The evening came to a close with refreshments and fellowship as students prepared for the coming year of learning, stretching, and growing in their relationships with Christ.

September 11 marked the end of Opening Weekend with classes set to begin the following morning, but there was still one final and essential activity on the agenda. The event in question? Campus Clash. The student body was split in two and set to compete in a fierce three hours of campus-wide challenges, games, and cheers. The Blue Team performed with great grit and morale, but it was ultimately the Red Team that came out with the win, leaving the Blues and their “Stinky Feet” behind.

An exciting athletic event provided students with a unique opportunity to encourage and support participants as they strove to accomplish their goals. Early on the first Sunday of October, students prepared for the morning ahead. Spread across campus and awaiting the arrival of the runners, signs were organized, pom-poms distributed, cheers discussed, and routines brainstormed until the long-anticipated moment finally came and the very first runners arrived on property. Cheers could be heard across campus as students encouraged the athletes to keep going and finish out the final few miles that stood between them and their accomplishment of this great feat of endurance. Word of Life Huskies sports teams played a special role in the Adirondack Marathon as they were stationed at various checkpoints throughout the route to hand out bottles of water and encourage the runners to keep going. By the end of the day, many runners expressed immense gratitude for the encouragement and enthusiasm students brought to the day. Student participation didn’t end on the sidelines, however. There were several students and even some staff members who participated in the run itself. Seeing familiar faces pass by on the track was a clear highlight, and the excitement it created was certainly something that could be heard as the runners continued on their way. The annual Adirondack Marathon Distance Festival was a wonderful experience of practicing encouragement and fellowshipping with one another as students strove to represent Christ to those who got to experience campus for even just a few moments as they passed through.

“You are not the whole picture; you are just a part of God’s picture.”

– Phil Moser, during Alumnus of the Year Award speech

74

Homecoming Weekend commenced with a reunion dinner and fellowship for the class of 1973. Following supper was the presentation of the Alumnus of the Year Award to recipient Phil Moser.

Saturday – the biggest and most jampacked day of Homecoming Weekend was filled with all sorts of campus activities and opportunities for alumni, staff, and students to reconnect and get to know one another. The cold and rainy day may have caused the cancellation of some events on the agenda, but the Huskies men’s soccer team showed great determination in playing and continuing to be examples of Christ in their ministry to the opposing team despite the weather. Soccer, however, was not the only sport of the weekend. 6:00 PM began the ultimate face-off between the men’s and women’s Word of Life Huskies basketball teams and the alumni teams who were ready to show that their school spirit has lasted beyond graduation. Ultimately, it was the Word of Life Huskies who came out on top in both the men’s and women’s games, proving the teams’ dedication and determination to face the challenges ahead of them.

75

After receiving the award, Pastor Moser spoke during the Opening Chapel. He challenged students and alumni alike to give their gifts and service openly and watch as God intertwines each person’s personal strengths together in order to accomplish the completion of His ultimate and perfect picture. Following Chapel, the night came to its conclusion with a showing of Jesus Revolution .

The approaching end of Homecoming Weekend 2023 culminated with Worship Night in The Barn. Students, alumni, and their families came together for a time of worship as they reflected on what true God-honoring and loving worship looks like. This was a fitting conclusion to a weekend of fellowship with alumni and current students as it focused on drawing everything back to the Lord, the reason Word of Life Bible Institute exists.

FIGHT NIGHT

MAIN EVENT: DREW BURTIS VS. JON LOUGH

DATE: OCTOBER 27

TIME: 9:00 PM

LOCATION: THE HUSKIES DEN

77

Fall Fun Night, better known as Fight Night, was an evening defined by its festivities, food, and fellowship – but most prominently, by its fights. Students dressed in costumes of all kinds gathered and spent time with one another, discussing their various ideas and costume themes as they awaited the beginning of the long-anticipated main event of the night. Later, students would pair up, enter the inflatable gladiator ring, and face off against each other in hopes of being the final fighter standing. However, there was one vital battle standing in front of the student fights. Professors Drew Burtis and Jonathan Lough were prepared to kick Fight Night into full swing with a rematch like no other. As their names were announced, cheers reverberated around the gymnasium. The professors stepped into the ring and took their places, ready to fight. The first two rounds passed quickly as Burtis and Lough found themselves in a tie. The title of Professor Winner of Fight Night 2023/24 came down to the final round. With everything on the line, both exhibited valiant efforts. In the end, it was Professor Jonathan Lough whose balance held out just long enough to pronounce him the winner, defending his title for two years running. Fight Night was an action-packed evening of fun and connecting that helped students build stronger bonds with one another as they continued in a year that was sure to impact their lives in great ways.

Student Leadership Christmas Party

79

As the Christmas season began, student leaders across campus came together for an evening of celebration and fellowship. This time of hilarity and laughter gave those in leadership positions a chance to relax, celebrate the season, and exchange stories from the past semester. Brian Baker, Executive Dean of New York Bible Institute Campus and Vice President of Bible Institutes was the theme of the night. Students exhibited immense dedication as they surprised Mr. Baker himself by wearing bald caps and carrying around cutouts of his face. The evening was filled with laughs as the leaders and staff played a Kahoot of Brian Baker trivia and concluded with an intense game of musical chairs. Overall, the Student Leader Christmas Party was a night of festive fun as students grew closer to one another and worked together to pull off a great surprise for their Executive Dean.

Dorm walk-throughs and decorating competitions, hot chocolate and Word of Life Polar Express rides, even suite scavenger hunts and theological readings of ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas. Each of these and many more were the ingredients that went into the campus-wide Christmas party of 2023. It was a night of celebration and festivities where students could take a break from their studies and enjoy fellowship and Christmas cheer. A night of laughter, smiles, and sugar enticed energy led the way into the last few days of classes before break that was sure to send students off ready for the season.

“God does not waste our time.”

– Cianna Benson

A buzz was in the air as Christmas break drew ever closer, but for some students, the final week of classes for the 2023 year meant so much more than the prospect of an upcoming break. The final week also meant that Freshman and Sophomore students enrolled as Spring Students would be recognized for their endurance, dedication, and resilience in completing the Word of Life Bible Institute program. Vice president of Bible Institutes, Brian Baker, shared some words of encouragement with the graduates as they prepared to move on to wherever the Lord takes them next.

He reminded the students that they have been called to a life of devoted faithfulness to the Lord—serving, trusting, and pursuing Him wholeheartedly, and not merely a life of ease and comfort. This message complimented Cianna Benson’s testimony which emphasized that “God does not waste our time.” Both speakers drew great attention to how the Lord works in the lives of those who trust Him, and left the graduates with truth that they can take with them wherever He leads them next.
