Market Square & Belfry Life in Bruges centres on the market square which is overlooked by the Belfry Tower (NB: there are over 300 steps to the summit of the Belfry). The massive tower dates back to the 13th century and the view from the top looks out over all of Bruges. Established in 1245 and once home to the Beguines – emancipated lay women – today the Sisters of the Order of Saint Benedict live here in the small, white-washed houses.
