It’s important to stay properly hydrated all year round, but with summer in full swing, it’s especially important to be sure you’re drinking enough water. Our bodies are about 60% water, and that’s because H20 is vital to distributing nutrients and oxygen throughout the body, helping flush out waste and toxins, and keeping your organs functioning properly. But did you know that staying hydrated is also a key component of good oral health? Here’s why: If you’re hydrated, you’re drinking water regularly, and if you’re drinking water regularly, you’re essentially rinsing your mouth many times a day. It helps rid the mouth of food residue and eliminates cavity-causing bacteria. Plus, we have to drink something, and choosing water over juice, tea, or other beverages means you’re forgoing the potential sugars and acids in those beverages. We all know that sugar can lead to bad bacteria and cavities, and acids (in some drinks) can erode your enamel. In this month’s cover article, Dr. Maddahi talked about how full-time mask- wearing has led to an increased incidence of dry mouth and related tooth decay. Drinking water is one way to combat dry mouth. Water helps with saliva production, and that saliva is an essential component of oral health. It is full of calcium, fluoride, and phosphate ions, which help fortify the enamel of your teeth and keep them strong. Note that if you have persistent dry mouth, drinking water may not be enough to address the issue. Book a consultation with Dr. Maddahi to get to the root of the problem. Having a bottle of water nearby at all times is a good way to boost your intake. If you’re not a fan of plain water, try adding cucumber or citrus slices or herbs like mint to add flavor while avoiding the sugar and acids in other beverages. Mint has the bonus of being a cooling herb, which is a perfect way to beat the summer heat!
