Helmsley: How Housing is Linked to Healthcare Access

The most common barriers involve difficulty recovering at home and unsafe living conditions (Figure 10). High-need New Yorkers with housing hardship were more likely to report not having a clean and comfort- able place to recover, with 7% of those facing some hardship and 11% of those with persistent hardship re- porting this challenge, compared to just 3% of those without hardship. A similar pattern appears for unsafe living conditions, such as exposure to mold or lead: 9–11% of those with housing hardship reported unsafe conditions, compared to 4% of those with stable housing. The most common housing-related healthcare barriers were lack of a clean place to recover and unsafe living conditions, such as mold and lead exposure, over 2023-2024. High-need refers to New Yorkers with high healthcare needs, such as multiple chronic health conditions, serious psychological distress, or a work-limiting health condition. The findings in this section confirm that high-need New Yorkers experiencing housing hardship not only face greater barriers to accessing healthcare but are also more likely to live in conditions that directly com- promise and impede their ability to manage their health.
