Spaulding: Don't Ignore Back Pain

NEWSLETTER May 2018 PREPARE TO SWIM IN THE WATER SAFELY!

Swimming is a great recreational sport that can be enjoyed by people of all ages. But it’s important to know how to be safe while you’re in the water. These important swimming safety tips are what you should be aware of before you head out to the pool or beach. • Swim in designated areas supervised by lifeguards. • Always swim with a buddy; do not allow anyone to swim alone. • Never leave a young child unattended near water and do not trust a child’s life to another child; teach children to always ask permission to go near water.

• If you have a pool, secure it with appropriate barriers. Many children who drown in home pools were out of sight for less than five minutes and in the care of one or both parents at the time. • Protect your skin. Limit the amount of direct sunlight you receive between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. and wear sunscreen with a protection factor of at least 15. • Drink plenty of water regularly, even if you’re not thirsty. Avoid drinks with alcohol or caffeine in them.

Back Pain Relief With Spaulding Physical Therapy

4. Lumbar sprain/strain: This is a common cause of low back pain due to injury of muscles and tendons. The rows of muscles that run up and down the sides of the spinal column, are the major muscle groups usually involved in lower back injury. 5. Fractures: These are due to trauma, or sometimes occur without any injury in people with osteoporosis. 6. Spinal cord compression: This is unusual, but very worrisome and may be associated with weakness and loss of bowel/bladder control. Medication and Bed Rest Most lower back pain sufferers try over the counter drugs and bed rest. However, most self remedies will not provide the relief that you need. In fact, bed rest is the wrong thing to do, because it can weaken the spinal muscles further. Weakness in the spinal muscles is one of the main reasons for low back pain and puts you at risk for injuring your back with common activities such as lifting, bending or squatting. Most of us sit too much and this contributes to severe weakening of the back and torso muscles which are needed for a healthy back.

1. Lumbar or sacral radiculopathy: The result of pressure on a nerve exiting the spine. Pain, numbness and tingling can be felt down in different parts of the leg. 2. Sciatica: This comes from compression of the sciatic nerve by a muscle called the piriformis, deep in the buttock. Symptoms can radiate down the buttock and leg. 3. Spinal stenosis: This is a narrowing of the bony spinal canal which causes rubbing or pressure on nerves. Central canal stenosis is quite serious as it presses upon the spinal cord.

ARE YOUPREPARED TO TAKE A FUNTRIP THIS SEASON? 8 SPRING TRAVEL TIPS FOR FAMILIES

Keep the kids on a routine. Don’t get too far away from your daily habits while traveling. Bedtimes should obviously be extended, but don’t over do it or falling asleep on school nights will be tough once you’re back at home. 1. Choose the right destination for your family. Discuss ideas for travel destinations and what to do during your free time; be sure each person has something to look forward to on the trip. All-inclusive resorts are a great option, with activities for kids, spas for parents, and beaches and pools for the whole family to enjoy together. 2. Stick to your budget. Don’t blow your annual vacation budget in March or April if you plan to escape in the summer! Also allot a separate amount of money for the inevitable splurge purchases. 3.Take advantage of travel deals. Research the hotels and resorts in the area to which you’ll be traveling, and compare prices. Oftentimes, simply booking your accommodations in advance can save you big money. 4. Pack the essentials. Be sure to ask what toiletries and other products are provided before packing your bags. 5. Protect yourself and your home. Do not state that your home is vacant during your trip. Instead, tell trustworthy friends and family that you’ll be traveling, and ask them to visit your house once or twice to ensure there is no suspicious activity. 6. Travel on less popular days. Airline costs are higher and traffic is heavier on the weekends. Opt to travel midweek if you can. 7. Make reservations for special experiences. Many attractions allow you to buy tickets online beforehand (usually at a discounted price). If you have plans to dine at a popular restaurant, make reservations at least a month or more in advance.
