NEW ZEALAND BEEKEEPER, JUNE 2017

COMMENT FROM THE TUTORS Murray Christensen (beekeeper and Chair of Southland Bee Society), Pat Hoffmann (beekeeper and Environment Southland Education Officer) and Sonya Crook have worked with Limehills School to format a curriculum orientated Bee Class for the Year 5 and 6 students (11–12 year olds). Murray tutors the monthly 90-minute class with assistance from Pat. During class the students get to look through the hive and record their findings, which are then used for research and projects. The students also learn about bee behaviour and basic beekeeping skills. Classroom time is spent learning about bees, bees in the environment and their food sources, the apiculture industry, bee products, effects of pesticides/chemicals on bees, and extracting and selling honey harvested from the hive. Limehills School is more than happy to share its Bee Class experience with other schools that are considering having a school hive and or running a bee class.
