Matty Boreland is ready to make his mark and bring a title fight to Coleraine’s Showgrounds Matty Boreland Fights for His Dreams
He has just returned from a training camp in Portugal, where he got to spar with former world champion Charlie Edwards. Regardless of where this journey ends, the amiable Matty is already building up a lifetime of memories. “If someone had told me even a couple of years ago where I would be now, I would have said they were lying. “Even in the last year, I have to pinch myself sometimes. “I’m sharing changing rooms and training with boxers I grew up watching on television. “Now I’m on the TV with them and forming friendships with them. “I know there will be bumps along the road, but I have confidence in my ability and one day I am determined to fight at the Showgrounds!”
That fight, on the undercard of the Lewis Crocker/Paddy Donovan rematch, was his first scheduled ten-round contest. There will be highs and lows along the way, but just how far does the Coleraine FC fan, who one day wants to have a title fight at the Showgrounds, believe he can go in one of the toughest sports around? “A British title”, the man known as ‘Bam Bam’ tells us emphatically. “A World title would be great,” he laughs, “but I’d settle for a British title. “Since I set out as a pro, that’s been my goal.” Coached by former world champion Ryan Burnett, Matty is living the dream right now.
THEY SAY IF you’re gonna dream, dream big. That expression couldn’t be more apt for Coleraine’s latest sporting success. Rising star Matty Boreland is the town’s first professional boxer in a quarter of a century. Since his debut fight in June 2024, he has been making people sit up and take notice at his rapid rise through the ranks. In his short career, he has already fought at the SSE Arena and just this month fought at Windsor Park. In only his sixth professional fight, he took on ‘El Nino’, Rudy Farrell, for the Irish Super Bantamweight title.
