A Two-for-One Lifechanging Event The Twins Finally Arrive!

more often, comforted by Lia Grace’s presence. It’s impossible to overstate how gratifying it is to see the awesome relationship they’ve built over the last two years. It makes us feel like maybe we’ve been doing something right, and it really makes me excited to see how the kids get along with their new siblings as they get a little more animated. In the months before the birth, I was completely slammed at every moment, but of course, it can’t compare to the ironclad poise, support, and positivity of my wife as she continued to care for the kids while I was at the clinic. It’s difficult to put into words the flood of emotions that overtakes me watching her become a mom for the third time. It seems appropriate that the twins were born with Mother’s Day right around the corner. Honestly, Lisa is tied withmy ownmom as the most amazingmother I’ve ever known, and those are some big shoes to fill. Nomatter what gets thrown her way—even twins! —she takes it in stride, never letting the stress of the situation get to her. I can’t even fathomhow she managed her day in the weeks before the twins arrived, keeping the kids busy in the midst of all the doctors’ appointments and the million other things that needed to get done. I can’t express to you how it felt to first see the tiny balled-up fists of my two newest children, the flood of boundless love and gratitude. The birth of your child is always one of the proudest, most important moments of a person’s life, and to have that reflected twice over — it’s beyond words. All I can say is that I’m so, so happy to have Lisa andmy wonderful family by my side, the two twins shepherding us into a brand new, vibrant stage of life together.

This month, my wife Lisa and I are excited to announce that as of April 23, we’re the proud parents of two new additions to the Russo family! Michele Stella Russo and Michael Dean Russo arrived into the world with no problem at all — though they showed up a little earlier than we expected—and we’re so thrilled to have themwith us, safe and sound. Lisa, as always, was an absolute champion, and our two older children Lia Grace and Jack are maybe somehow evenmore excited than we are to finally meet their new brother and sister. I’ve been amazed at how smoothly everything has gone since the beginning and absolutely floored by how incredible of a mom Lisa has been at every turn. Even when we were utterly booked solid with chores to prepare for the newborns, she remained a total supermom to the other kids. I’m just glad we moved Lia Grace and Jack into a single room a fewweeks ago and got the nursery all finished up in time for Michele and Michael’s arrival. For weeks, Jack was obsessed with his newThomas the Tank Engine-themed bed, but now, he’s got two new siblings to fawn over. In fact, Lia Grace and Jack have been fantastic and supportive throughout the process. They were pumped from the moment we announced Lisa’s pregnancy and are now just over the moon with their two new siblings. With some kids, losing their private space can become a cause for conflict, but they’ve loved it so far. Even before they became roommates, two-year-old Jack’s first question every morning was“Where’s sissy?”So now, he’s loving rooming with his big sister. Before, he used to wake up in the middle of the night frightened or unable to sleep, but lately, he’s been staying in his bed

Mothers Shape the World Moms make the world go round. After running the gauntlet of childbirth, they raise and guide us throughout our lives, shouldering the tremendous burden and responsibility of motherhood. Irena Sendler (1910–2008) 3 of History’s Bravest Moms

When the Nazis invaded Warsaw in September of 1939, Irena Sendler, a 29-year-old social worker and mother of two, hatched a scheme to rescue Jewish children from the brutal ghettos. Along with many friends and colleagues, she smuggled out nearly 2,500 Jewish orphans, hiding infants on trams and garbage wagons and guiding kids through a labyrinth of secret passageways beneath the city. Emmeline Pankhurst (1858–1928)

Mothers are in turn formidable, kind, powerful, gentle, wise, fierce, patient, supportive, empathetic, driven, and full of love. In honor of Mother’s Day, here are three historic moms who never stopped fighting for what they believed in. Sojourner Truth (1797–1883)

Before she escaped from New York slaveholder John Dumont, Sojourner Truth had at least three of her children sold away from her. When Dumont went back on his promise to emancipate Truth and her infant daughter in 1826, she took the girl and fled to an abolitionist Quaker family, but she was forced to leave her other daughter and her 5-year-old son, Peter, behind. Soon after, she learned that Peter had been illegally sold by Dumont to a slaveholder in Alabama, so she went to court and secured his safe return.

Despite being a wife and the mother of five children — two of whom died tragically young — Emmeline Pankhurst became one of the fiercest advocates for women’s suffrage in the late 19th century. After founding the Women’s Social and Political Union in 1903, she and her cohorts adopted an aggressive strategy to raise awareness for the issue; they began by buttonholing politicians and staging

rallies, then progressed to vandalism, window smashing, and arson. She was instrumental in the movement. Pankhurst lived to see women gain the right to vote in 1928.

It was the first successful case brought by a black woman against a white man in American history. Truth went on to become a prominent abolitionist and a speaker for women’s rights, delivering her famous impromptu speech, “Ain’t I a Woman?” in May of 1851.

A Look at 3 Common Tennis Injuries D n’ Be Sidelined by Pain

Not all sports injuries happen instantly; many occur over time. Consider the activities that many of us are involved in throughout our lives, such as biking, golfing, and swimming. Tennis, for instance, comes with its fair share of long-term injuries. Over years of playing, these seemingly minor injuries can compound and worsen, leading to inflammation, pain, and reduced range of motion. When that happens, these injuries can leave you on the sidelines. Tennis Elbow Also known as lateral epicondylitis, this condition is characterized by inflamed tendons around the outer part of the elbow. This is also the injury most associated with the game of tennis, and for good reason. Due to the repetitive swinging motions that come with the sport, your muscles and forearms can become strained and eventually damaged. Rotator Cuff Tendonitis Your rotator cuff is critical for the range of motion you use in the shoulder joint. In tennis, stress on the four muscles that make up the rotator cuff

can cause them to become inflamed or even tear. Certain movements, such as the serve and the overhead slam, can strain the rotator cuff, leading to pain, sensitivity, and weakness in the shoulder. Impingement Syndrome Sometimes referred to as “swimmer’s shoulder,” this syndrome occurs when the tendons of the rotator cuff pass through the subacromial space and become inflamed. The subacromial space is the area below the acromion, an extended part of the shoulder blade, nearest the shoulder joint. When these tendons become inflamed, you can expect pain and a limited range of motion. With the right physical therapy program, you can address each of these conditions. You don’t have to rely on pain medication or surgery to correct these issues. The sooner you notice the symptoms — pain, inflammation, swelling, or loss of range of motion — the sooner a trained physical therapist can treat and potentially reverse your condition.

Gear Up for Grilling Season

Get Your Grill On

2 May Holidays, 2 Reasons to Grill

and arugula for flavor and texture. If you want to get extra fancy, pour a bit of balsamic reduction over the patty before adding the toppings. The Portobello Burger For a delicious veggie burger even meat eaters will love, use a portobello mushroom as your patty. Remove the stems, then marinate the mushrooms for 15 minutes in a mixture of 1 tablespoon red wine vinegar, 3 tablespoons olive oil, and a clove of minced garlic. Season the shrooms with salt and pepper, then place them on the grill just as you would any other burger. Gruyere cheese is the perfect creamy topping, and you can use grilled focaccia bread topped with garlic aioli. As you bask in the late spring weather and the inviting smell of delicious food this Memorial Day, take a moment to remember the Americans who gave their lives so we could enjoy these freedoms, and thank those who served.

Is there anything more American than grilling a burger outside on Memorial Day? This year, there’s another reason to fire up the grill that weekend: In addition to being Memorial Day, May 28 is also National Hamburger Day! Enjoy this delicious coincidence by heating up the grill, gathering the fixings, and making one of these tasty burgers at home. The Classic Burger Nothing beats the American classic: a seasoned beef patty, a slice of cheddar cheese, a squirt each of mustard and ketchup, a layer of crunchy lettuce, some thinly sliced onions, and a couple of zesty pickles. For a homemade touch, make the pickles yourself by soaking cucumbers in a brine of vinegar, dill, and salt. The Mediterranean Burger Take your patty to the next level with a Mediterranean twist. Mix feta cheese and garlic into your ground beef before forming your patties. Serve it on a grilled ciabatta bun topped with marinated red peppers
