When our every deed and word and thought Should our fealty proclaim, Full oft we bring His name to nought And Cover Him with shame. Not alone did Judas his Master sell, Nor Peter his Lord deny; Each one who doth His love repel, Or at His guidance doth rebel, Doth the Lord Christ crucify. Like the men o f old, we vote His death, • Lest His life should interfere With the things we have, or the things we crave, Or the things we hold more dear. Christ stands at the bar of the world today, As He stood in the days o f old. Let each man tax his soul and say, Shall I again my Lord betray For my greed, or my goods, or my gold? —J ohn O xenham . III. T he B urden When Cortez and his companions were obliged to flee from Mexico on that fearful night when the Aztecs entered the city, Cortez warned his soldiers against taking too much gold with them, for each soldier must fight his way through the enemies’ host. “He travels safest in the night who travels lightest,” said Cortez. It was hard to heed this advice, for they had accumu lated a vast amount of gold, but the more prudent ones did obfey, and escaped un harmed. Some, however, who bound heavy chains of gold about their necks and shoulders, staggered under their burden of gold, and attempting to escape became a prey to their enemies. It is ever so with the greedy soul.—W ebb . IV. W aste Our economic system causes great waste. Shoe factories could produce 1,750,000 pairs o f shoes a year, but actually produce only 1,000,000 pairs. Plant capacity goes to waste. What is wrong is- that if all worked at capacity, there is no way of get ting the shoes to all the people that need them, for multitudes have no money to buy them.—A nderson . OCTOBER 21, 1934 How May W e Help to Put the Spirit of Christ into Economic life ? M atthew 20:25-28 Suggestions for the Meeting Hymn—“More Like the Master.” Hymn—“More Love to Thee.” Hymn—“Where He Leads Me.” Prayer. Scripture—Matthew 20 :25-28. Solo— “His Eye Is on the Sparrow.” Leader’s Message. Testimonies. , Quiet Hour. Hymn—“ Others.” Benediction—Psalm 19:14. Meditation on the Lesson How wonderfully the whole economic situation would be changed if everybody could follow verse 27 o f our lesson : “ Who soever will be chief among you, let him be your servant” ! What a contrast this is to the average man’s opinion of greatness or importance ! The context of this passage is most im portant. The Lord Jesus Christ had been telling the twelve disciples of His. ap proaching sufferings and death, when the mother of Zebedee’s children interrupted with her worldly request that her two sons should occupy the two highest seats of honor in Jesus’ kingdom. How sordid and unsympathetic !

Testimonies. Hymn—>“Go, Labor O n ; Spend and Be Spent.” Quiet Hour. Benediction—The Golden Rule (Matt. 7:12). Meditation on the Lesson In this vivid picture, painted by the in spired apostle, we are amazed to see a striking likeness to our own economic con ditions. Should James have been trans planted into our modern America, he would have seen the same sad aspects of busi ness life. I f men o f the laboring class who gather in parks and plazas to discuss their grievances were asked to select their favor ite Bible passage, this one would no doubt receive the most votes. It expresses their impeachment of modern civilization. And sadder still, we Christian people have to admit that even so-called Christians have been and are guilty of the charges James makes. There are four counts to James’ indict ment. The first charge is of the abuse of pos sessions through selfish amassing of wealth: “Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are moth-eaten . . . Ye have laid up your treasure in the last days” (Jas. 5:2, 3, R. V .). James in his sternness here reminds us o f what our Lord said concerning God’s declaration to the rich man: “Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee.” Christ then added: “ So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.” It is not a sin to have, but it is sin to abuse and wrongfully use. Second is fraud: “ Behold, the hire of the laborers who mowed your fields, which is of you kept back by fraud, crieth out” (Jas. 5:4, R .V .). “It is impossible for a business man to live a Christian life,” said a tradesman re cently in Hyde Park. When asked why he had said that, his reply was, “Well, my master is a church-warden at------------ Church, and he expects me to be dishonest to our customers.” How our Lord must be grieved by the attitude o f many of His professed followers! The third accusation is that of cruelty: These rich men cheated and oppressed till their victims cried out in distress. Do we remember that people in our em ploy have souls? “Whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them” is the Golden Rule our Saviour left. Lastly, James accuses the rich of wasting their wealth on themselves: “ Ye have lived delicately on the earth, and taken your pleasure” (Jas. 5:5, R. V .). It is a charge o f selfish living, of having no love in the heart for others. What a picture 1 How unlike the principles laid down by our Saviour 1 His standard is far different: “If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.” Leader’s Helps I. R egret “ If I had my life to live over again,” said Horace Bushnell in his old age, “there is one thing I would not do—I would not push .’’—S elected . II. C hrist S tands at the B ar of the W orld Christ stands at the bar o f the world today

M a n y p erson s say “ Did you ' hear f r o m him today.” T h ey should say, “ Have you h e a r d from him today.” Some s p e l l “calendar” “calender” or “cal- ander.” Still others say “ between you and I” instead of “ between you and me.” It is astonish

ing how often “ who” is used for “whom,” and how frequently the simplest words are mispronounced. Few know whether to spell certain words with one or two “c’s” or “m’s” or “r’s,” or with “ie” or “ ei.” Most persons use only common words—colorless, flat, ordinary. Their speech and their let ters are lifeless, monotonous, humdrum. Every time they talk or write they show themselves lacking in the essential points of English. Wonderful New Invention For many years Mr. C’ody studied the problem of creating instinctive habits of using good English. After countless experiments he finally..invented a simple method by which you can acquire a better command of the English language in only 15 min utes a day. Now you can stop making the mistakes which have been hurting you. Mr. Cody’s students have secured more improvement in five weeks than previously had been obtained by other pupils in two years1 Loam by Habit— Not by Rules Under old methods rules are memorized, but correct habits are not formed. Finally the rules themselves are forgotten. The new Sherwin Cody method provides for the formation of correct habits by calling to your attention constantly only the mis takes you yourself make. One of the wonderful things about Mr. Cody’s course is the speed with which these habit-forming practice drills can be carried out. Y oucan write the answers to fifty questions in 15 minutes and correct your work in 5 minutes more. The drudgery and work of copying have been ended by Mr. Cody I You concentrate always on your own mistakes until it becomes “ second nature’’ to speak and write correctly.
