do more harm to the mission than were he to let the natives take his life. So as a lamb to the slaughter he was led, and when his dead body was found in the stream, his rifle was also found, its ten chambers un touched.—M. J. M c L eod . IV. T h e P lace of C onflict A student volunteer o f Colorado, testi fying as to his reason for going to the foreign field, said: “ I have found to fight forest fires effectively that you must go where the fire is hottest. The foreign field is where the fire is hottest.”— H allock . V. H eroes There are nameless heroes among mis sionaries in Africa and elsewhere. They are literally giving their lives for others. Other leaders there are and have been in Africa, who stand out above the ranks as heroes. W e think o f Mackay of Uganda, Laws o f Livingstonia, Grenfell o f the Congo, and Mary Slessor, the White Queen o f Okoyong. Sam Higginbottom has made life more abundant for myriads of people in India. He Opened an agricultural school and showed the natives how to make a living, and above all introduced men and women to Him who is able to give life eternal. In addition might be mentioned the Tay lors of China, William Borden, Sheldon Jackson of Alaska, the Goforths of China, and numbers o f other true heroes who said with Paul: “Neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify o f the gospel o f the grace o f God” (Acts 20:24).—M .G .G . A New Bible Game An interesting new Bible puzzle has re cently been published. It looks something like a jig-saw puzzle, and is designed as an aid in memorizing Scripture. A complete verse is printed on each piece o f the puz zle, and when all are put together, they form a figure corresponding to the number o f the chapter from which the verses are taken. For instance, when the forty-eight verses of Matthew 5 are properly put to gether, they form the figure five. The ir regular edges o f the pieces are so made that only consecutive verses may be placed side by side. No numbers are printed on the separate pieces, o f course, but a chart, with the verse numbers printed on it, is furnished with each puzzle. The puzzles are packed in boxes that look like thin books. Similar puzzles have been published for the sixth and seventh chapters of Matthew, and for the names o f the sixty-six books of the Bible. The names of the Old Testament books, when complete, form the letter O, and those in the New Testament, the letter N. It will readily be seen that these puzzles will be useful in the Sunday-school, in the home, in summer Bible schools, in home mission work, and that they will furnish a profitable pastime for shut-ins. The three “volumes,” or boxes, contain ing Matthew 5, 6, and 7, may be obtained for 25 cents each; the “volume” containing the names o f the books of the Bible, which really consists o f two puzzles, costs 50 cents; or the four volumes together may be obtained for $1.00. The name of the plan or game is “ Vers-lox,” and the puzzles may be obtained from the Vers-lox Library Corporation, Paramount Building, New York City.
