come.” This is our work, to spread the good news about Christ throughout the earth, so that His kingdom may come. “ Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven” ; the time will come, after Christ returns again to this world, that sin will be no more on earth. “Give us this day our daily bread” ; everything we have comes from God. “ And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors” ; God will forgive our sins if we will ask Him to; and as He forgives us, so we should forgive those who sin against us. “And lead us not into temptation, but de liver us from evil” ; God will keep us from sinning and from yielding to temptation, if we pray to Him about it. “ For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever” ; all belongs to God, and to Him belongs all praise. Shall we pray this prayer together?

Thè coach replied, “You will have to learn some hard lessons before you will be able to play a game o f football.” A girl once said, “Mother, will you teach me how to make a silk dress ?” The mother answered, “There are many lessons about sewing which you will need to know before you can sew on silk.” The disciples came to Christ and said, “Lord, teach us to pray.” He gave them a model for prayer, but they had not really learned to pray when they could only re peat the words which He had given them. In the case o f some, days and even years passed before they learned to pray. They did not realize that the crucifixion would take place before they would learn to pray. Here is a little cross, reminding us of one of the scenes the disciples had to witness while learning to pray. Then, there were the days of waiting between the resurrection and the day of Pentecost. We will let this little dove re mind us o f the coming o f the Holy Spirit on that day, as another lesson in the school of prayer. Would you like to have this chain around your wrists and be chained in a dark dun-, geon? Some o f the followers o f Christ did not learn to pray until they were chained as prisoners and their freedom had been taken away. God often lets different trials come into our lives in order that we may learn to pray. Many boys never really pray until they lose something o f value, and then they ask God to help them find it. Many girls never learn to pray until they have prob lems that they cannot solve, and then they ask God to help them. Prayer is of infinitely more value than football or dressmaking, and we should be willing to learn by whatever lesson God thinks best. . The cause o f such a state is found in the fact that the understanding is darkened (v. 18) ; that is, there is no settled prin ciple of life, no sound theory, the mind being obscured and blinded. Hence, when the gospel is sent forth from God, it is for the purpose o f opening men’s eyes and turning them from darkness to light (cf. Acts 26:18). And the darkness is there be cause individuals are “alienated from the life o f God.” The word “ alienated” means “nonparticipant,” and its use here reveals the truth that the natural man has nothing of the life of God in him and therefore must be born aga'in (John 3:1-7). And this condition in turn rises from the “ignorance that is in them.” The ignorance mentioned here comes from a word meaning “not to know by ignoring” (Rom. 10:3). Men and women could know, if they desired to know, but they ignored the truth which would cure the ignorance (Rom. 1:21). Finally, the ignorance results from the “blindness for, hardness] of their heart.” “Hardness” comes from a root meaning “to make callous, to petrify.” The consequence o f such a state is that the individual becomes “past feeling” (v. 19). The conscience is seared; it cannot be impressed; it is adamant. The heart be comes like the “ conscience seared with a hot iron,” leaving a growth so hard that nothing can penetrate it. And this is the 2 :5 ), and it is used of all who forsake the ways of God and “observe lying vanities” (Jonah 2 :8 ).

Lesson Text: Eph. 4:17-27; 5:15-21. Golden Text: “And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit” (Eph. 5:18). Outline and Exposition I. L if e w it h o u t C h r is t (4:17-19). I t is implied that Christians were once as other Gentiles, living in “the vanity of their mind” (v. 17). The word “vanity” means “inutility” or “transitory,” and it describes the character of the life of un saved people. The word is used in the book o f Ecclesiastes, where all that is “ under the sun” is characterized as “van ity,” that is, something useless and unsatis fying. It is also used when Israel is con demned because she turned away from the Lord and “walked after vanity” (Jer. BLACKBOARD LESSON
