OCTOBER 25 God’s Work “ Yield yourselves unto God" (Rom. 6:13). May I take it for granted some o f you have been trying to be holy people? You make a diligent use of the means of grace, and you ask God to help you and bless you in such work. Yet you are not a bit better than you were; in fact, perhaps you are even worse. Do you want to know the secret o f it all? You are trying to do it in your own strength. The real truth is, it is not your work, and God will not help you to do it. Sanctification of the soul is God’s work, and you have been trying to take God’s work into your own hands and mould yourself after your desires. It is God’s work to make you holy, to take away bad temper, a covetous spirit, or bad thoughts. The secret o f holiness, after all, is giving up trying, and beginning to trust; and you can do that in a moment. — J. E lder C u m m in g . "I have called you friends" (John IS :15). What a wonderful thing is this, that our Lord should wish, and choose, and call His people to be His friends I Is there anything in the wide world so well worth having as the friendship o f the-Lord Jesus? Can anything in the wide world be worth keep ing which would cost us the enjoyment o f that friendship? Who would not let all go, and readily, the loss o f which would secure this glorious possession of becoming “the friend of God” ? The old mystics of the thirteenth century, with whom the true knowledge of God abode in the dark ages o f the church, were called “The Friends of God.” Would that every modern Chris tian were eager to possess the same title and enjoy the same privilege! And to enjoy it must mean the practical application o f this lesson of cleansing and purity. Doubtful things, of which you are not sure that the Lord approves, must be put away. — H ubert B rooke . OCTOBER 23 The Secret "My voice shalt thou hear in the morn ing, O Lord; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up" (Psa. 5:3 ). I sought the Lord in the morning, When my day was at its best; And His presence came like sunrise, Like a glory in my breast All day long the Presence lingered; A ll day long He stayed with m e; And we sailed in perfect calmness O’er a very troubled sea. Other ships were blown and battered, Other ships were sore distressed; But the winds that seemed to drive them Brought to us a perfect rest. Then I thought of other mornings, With a keen remorse o f mind, When I too had loosed the moorings, With the Presence left behind. So I think I know the secret, Learned from many a troubled way; You must seek Him in the morning, I f you want Him through the day 1 —R. S. C. OCTOBER 24 Why Christ Tarried “ There came . . . certain which said, Thy daughter is dead” (Mk. 5:35). It seemed that Jesus had tarried too long on the road. T o us, it appears that He ought not to have stopped at all to heal or talk with the woman. The child of Jairus was dying, and there was not a moment to lose. Why did the Master not hasten bn and get to her bedside before she died? But when we read the story through to the end, we are glad that He did stop and help the woman. One thing _we learn from this incident is that Jesus is never so much en grossed in one case o f need that He cannot stop to give attention to another. He is never so pressed for time that we have to wait our turn. Another thing we learn from this delay is that Jesus never comes too late, never waits too long. . . . True, the child died while He lingered; but this only gave Him an opportunity for a greater miracle. He waited that He might do a more glorious work. There is always some good reason for it when Christ delays to answer our prayers or come to our help. He waits that He may do far more for us. — J. R . M iller .
