merely plans to use his move as a cov- er for his disappearance from the Shire during his upcoming quest. However, Fatty learns the truth when Frodo and Sam reveal their true intentions to the others, becoming one of only five Hob- bits who know that Frodo possesses the One Ring. When Merry and Pippin vol- unteer to join Frodo on his quest, Fat- ty very nearly comes along as well, but relents for fear of the Old Forest. In- stead, Fatty returns to Hobbiton, where he does his best to cover for his friends' absence, keeping up appearances for the rest of the Shirefolk whose curiosity all too often gets the better of them.
er Hobbits in Bree. During the events of The Return of the King, Fatty again finds himself unwittingly drawn back into the action when Saruman's forc- es scour the Shire. Endowed with new courage at the sight of his hometown being ransacked by bands of villains, Fatty leads a charge against Saruman's forces but is eventually captured and locked away in prison. He is eventual- ly freed once the Shire is liberated by Frodo and his friends, though his incar- ceration has caused him to lose much of the weight that earned him his nick- name. After the main events of the tril- ogy, Fatty's younger sister, Estella, mar- ries Merry, thus making Merry and Fredegar brothers-in-law. Filling in the gaps The Hunt for Gollum has the unprece- dented opportunity to fill in gaps from the original Lord of the Rings trilo- gy, including storylines and characters who were otherwise deleted. The up- coming spinoff is expected to be set
during the events of Fellowship of the Ring, around the same time that Fatty is most involved in Frodo's quest. While little is known about which Lord of the Rings characters and settings will be re- visited in the film, The Hunt for Gol- lum could return to the Shire to help flesh out some of the characters who didn't get their proper due in the origi- nal trilogy. The parts we missed While some fans may be incredu- lous about The Lord of the Rings' new spinoff movies, The Hunt for Gol- lum can ease their concerns by finding new ways to flesh out the lore of Mid- dle-earth, including parts that were un- fortunately cut from Peter Jackson's adaptation. Characters like Fatty Bol- ger and Tom Bombadil, who simply couldn't fit into the larger narrative of the films, can finally get the chance to shine on the big screen thanks to new films like this, giving fans all the more reason to get excited.
