David Westerfield ABOUT: Since first picking up a crayon as a child, I have felt the desire and need to try and capture a visual experience. Drawing and painting are my response to and appreciation for what I see around me. I am interested in capturing the shapes, colors, and contrasts of sunlight and shadow, water and shore, earth and sky. I am attracted to subjects that exemplify the beauty of nature or that have a heart- felt significance in my life. While painting representationally, my goal is to exploit the medium of oil paint, letting brushwork and texture speak as art. As a graphic designer and illustrator, I have spent my career designing for others. Painting gives me the freedom to visually create for myself. THIS YEAR: This past year didn’t really affect my ability to paint en plein air too much, but I did spend more concentrated time in the studio, and that practice was a blessing. GALLERIES: Arbor Gallery, Glen Arbor, MI; Becky Thatcher Designs, Leland, MI; MacBeth & Co., Onekama, MI; Little Gallery, Mackinac Island, MI; The Gift Shop at The Muskegon Museum of Art, Muskegon, MI; Tvedten Fine Art, Harbor Springs, MI; Village Galleries, Lahaina, HI

“ Sky over S. Manitou,” Oil, 2020, 20 x 24 in, $1750. This view is from atop Sleeping Bear Point, one of my favorite spots for plein air painting. I painted this one in the studio with lots of reference from numerous hikes up there.

“Red Canoe,” Oil, 2020, 12 x 30 in, $1450. A friend of mine restored this old, wooden canoe. I pictured it on an up north Michigan shore. I did this as a study for perhaps a very large piece.
