Greetings Members, Every summer your club is bustling with activity and 2019 is no exception. This edition of the Rambler will describe numerous events in all areas of the club for you and your family to enjoy. To mention a few, the Annual July 4th Celebration is a club tradition you will not want to miss. Another tradition that will make your summer calendar complete is the Blessing of the Fleet on Sunday, August 4th. This unique Marina event is complimentary for all members and we encourage everyone to join us. Chef John will be preparing a delectable fish fry from 3 - 5 pm. Complete with a fishing contest, bounce house, and music, you and your family are sure to create some fantastic memories. For both of the previously mentioned events, reservations are not required. However, informing us of your intent to attend is always helpful in our preparations. We appreciate you letting us know and we look forward to seeing you at both of these club traditions. After an extensive search, I am excited to announce the arrival of your new Assistant General Manager, Mark Nelson. Mr. Nelson makes his way to Waco via California but had the opportunity to experience southern hospitality with his tenure in Louisiana for several years. Mark begins his tenure here at RCC with no shortage of short-term goals. Our objectives over the coming weeks will be to provide tangible results in improved food and service. I am confident his leadership and guidance will translate into meaningful contributions to our club. Please help me welcome Mark Nelson to the Ridgewood Family. The summer also brings a perfect opportunity to improve golf course conditions. At the time I am writing this message, plans are being reviewed to mitigate flood damage to Hole #1. Your receipt of this Rambler means that the Member Forum to review the mitigation plan has taken place. As with all major projects, we are committed to keeping the members informed and hope you found the member forum insightful.
By now many golfers have already recognized another improvement project that is underway. Your Golf Committee and Board are committed to ensuring your golf course remains the best in Central Texas. With this strategy in mind, we have begun to identify areas of improvement and taking action. The renovation to the right side of Hole #17 is continued evidence of this initiative. We are confident you will agree that this renovation not only improves the aesthetics of the hole but also allows for better turf growth. Through the remainder of the year, we will continue to address areas of concern and keep your course pushing forward. There is no better time to be a member of Ridgewood Country Club! See you at the club soon.

Please check out our turf maintenance blog for information on this project and other course happenings – www.ridgewoodwaco.blogspot.com.
The Importance of a Turf Nursery
As most of you are aware, we are planning to begin renovation work in mid-July that will improve our course in several ways. Our #1 Green will be raised about 15 ft – making it much less susceptible to flooding. At the same time, the tees on #2 will be renovated, the fairway bunker on #2 will be removed, and a much-needed new turf nursery will be constructed. The “turf nursery” part of the project likely does not grab your attention as much as the other items, but it is equally important. Here’s why: A nursery green can be defined as an additional putting green that it is used for sole purpose of maintaining and improving all of the other putting greens on the course. A well maintained nursery green serves several essential functions including: sod for immediate repair of damaged areas, sod and/or plugs for eliminating bermudagrass or other non-desirable plant species, provides a low risk area for testing the effectiveness of different chemical and fertilizer applications, and provides an area to test various equipment and cultural practices before taking them out on the course. One of our biggest goals for the new nursery is to have it serve as a testing ground for new bentgrass varieties. Most of our greens were last rebuilt in the early 1990s and were last replanted in 2007. Since this time our greens have aged and several improved varieties of bentgrass have become available. For multiple agronomic and playability factors, our greens will likely need to be rebuilt sometime in the
next three to five years. When this time comes – we need to be sure that we choose the best variety of bentgrass for RCC. We plan to use the new nursery to begin evaluating three to four different bentgrasses beginning this summer. The advantage to conducting trials on site at RCC is that we will have several growing seasons to evaluate which grass works best in our unique environment and with our management practices. We currently have two existing turf nursery greens located between Hole 18 tee box and our maintenance facility. These greens have been frequently damaged by flooding and are no longer functional. The new nursery will be built behind the main parking lot between Holes 4 and 6. We look forward to this summer’s improvement projects and appreciate your patience during construction and grow-in.

A huge amount of success in life comes from building good habits as a child. When children are young, it is a great time to set them on a path to healthy-eating. If children don’t develop good eating habits when they are young, it is much more difficult to overcome poor eating habits as an older child or adult. Helpful hint: Parents plan the meals and buy the groceries, not the children! Children are at the mercy of their parents when it comes to what they are going to eat. As a parent, utilize this opportunity to help your kids develop a life- long love of healthy eating. Just think how hard it is for us to consistently eat right at our age! However, if we had been taught at an early age, we might have formed healthy eating habits that carried over into adulthood. Things we were taught as a child do carry over into our adult life. Bad habits can be hard to break! While ignoring bad habits may help you feel good initially, bad habits do catch up with you. A long healthy life is no accident- it begins with good genes but it also depends on good habits, diet and exercise. Begin today by taking better care of yourself through healthy eating, exercising, as well as role modeling good habits for your kids!

Boating season has finally begun at the RCC Marina! With the flooding of the last few years, it sometimes feels like a continuous trend. Throughout historyWaco has experienced periods of drought and flooding, and will certainly continue to do so. Here at RCC we have learned to go with the flow and still enjoy the recreation that Lake Waco offers us each year. Having weathered the most recent flooding, we would like to take time to reflect on the years of struggle Waco has faced in having ample water supply. In a year or so, the rains will stop and we will be glad that our lake has reserves for the next drought we face so that RCC members can enjoy all the amenities our club has to offer. As flood waters recede, our Marina Staff has carefully monitored all docks and boats owned by members to assure we minimized the amount of damage procured throughout the flood. Through the diligence and dedication of our staff we are happy to report that no major damage was found as we have learned the best methods of mitigating damage through strengthening our marinas docks and procedures. We are happy to announce that the open house and Blessing of the Fleet have been rescheduled for August 4th!, Our marina is looking forward to an explosive 4th of July this year! It is our hope you will join us to celebrate the reopening of the marina and a successful boating season. Now, come on out and enjoy the lake! We have a great marina staff looking to ensure you have a memorable season throughout this summer and into the fall!

You can tell how friendly we are from miles and miles away.
The first thing people notice about us is our big Texas flag. But
what they remember is the way we treat our customers. We recognize their faces and know their needs. In some banks, that’s considered “special treatment.” To us, that’s just being Texas friendly.
