The House Athletics Carnival was one of the best events of the year! It took place at the Meadowglen International Athletics Track, and it was awesome seeing students and their families from Prep all the way up to Year 12 come together. The four Houses—Bial (red), Biik (green), Ngawan (yellow), and Yayal (blue)—really showed our school values, and it made the day so exciting. I was part of Team Bial, and I have to say, we gave it our all. The energy was amazing, and everyone was cheering each other on. Even though we didn ’ t win every event, we still felt really proud. The competition was tough, but that just made it even more fun. I competed in the 200m race and the relay. I didn ’ t win any ribbons, but I tried my best,
and that ’ s what mattered. It was great to watch the older students compete too. They really pushed themselves, and it inspired me to work harder for next year. At the end of the day, the scores were announced, and Bial came in first with 795 points! Ngawan came second with 648 points, Biik came third with 489 points, and Yayal finished last with 538 points. Even though we won, the best part was how everyone came together, no matter what House they were in. It wasn ’ t just about winning—it was about having fun, supporting each other, and showing team spirit. Overall, the House Athletics Carnival was a great experience, and I can ’ t wait for next year!

PRIMARY CAMPUS MARCUS ABNEY - HASTINGS PRIMARY CAMPUS PRINCIPAL
Dear Students, Parents/Carers, and Staff,
College and how they are feeling at school. This data is the cornerstone of everything we do here at The Lakes and compares us to every school in Victoria. Across the past 5 years, our data has continued to grow with data exceeding both the State median and like schools. This is something that as a leader, l am very proud of and shows that our students are proud of our school. STUDENT LEADERSHIP A massive thank you to our Student Leaders who continue to run our fortnightly student assemblies like experts. Our leaders continue to grow and develop within their role and have shown a wonderful understanding of our school and our values in everything they do. Our SRC students continue to work hard raising money for several school initiatives including outdoor seating for students and classroom sporting equipment. Keep up the great work! CAMPS. EXCURSIONS AND INCURSIONS Throughout Term 2, students will be involved in a number of excursions. These excursions are designed to extend learning outside of the classrooms and provide students real - world connections to the curriculum and build critical thinking and communication skills. These include Life Education Van in May, the Year 4 Scienceworks excursion and the Year 3 Wild Action Zoo Incursion. A highlight for our Year 5/6 students will be the upcoming Forest Edge Camp that is running from Wednesday 28th May until Friday 30th May. This camp promises to be a fun and memorable experience and will focus on students getting out of their comfort zone, challenging themselves and building friendships in a supportive environment. This camp will be followed by our Year 3/4 Camp on Wednesday September 3rd - Friday September 5th, 2025. Families are reminded to regularly check Compass for details of upcoming events. LEADERSHIP UPDATE Lastly, from a personal perspective, I will be taking some time away from The Lakes to take an Acting Principal position at Wollert Primary School. Bonnie Lee will be the Primary Campus Principal during my absence, having done this same role on our Secondary Campus over the past few years. Her rich experience, deep commitment to student achievement, and strong ties to the College make her an exceptional leader to guide our Campus this Term. Our families are in great hands.
As we conclude the Easter holidays and prepare to commence Term 2, I extend a heartfelt welcome back to our school community. I trust that each of you had a rejuvenating break, spending quality time with loved ones and recharging for the exciting Term ahead. At The Lakes, our commitment to fostering a nurturing and challenging environment remains steadfast. This Term, we will continue to emphasise the development of essential skills such as effective communication, critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration. These competencies are vital as we strive to prepare our students for the dynamic world beyond our school gates. I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the remarkable partnership between our school and our parents/carers. At The Lakes, we firmly believe that student success is a collaborative effort, and your involvement plays a pivotal role in creating a nurturing and conducive learning environment for our students. Your involvement in your child ’ s education is invaluable, and it is through our partnership that we can create a thriving learning community where every student can succeed. In saying this, I would like to take this opportunity to let families know that we are continuing (like every other school across Victoria) to have issues with the responsible use of social media, outside of school hours that is impacting students at school. It is NOT ok to degrade people on social media and if this happens, both the school and police need to be notified. Just like inappropriate use of social media, as a school we will not tolerate students using their hands and feet to hurt others. Students have the right to feel safe at school and as a school we will always put things in place to support everyone ’ s safety. If there are incidents via social media, parents/carers will be called, and meetings will take place. Thank you for your support on these matters. PARENT FEEDBACK SESSIONS On the last week of Term 1, I had the privilege of hosting several 2025 Prep parents/carers to discuss their child ’ s transition into our College. The overall feeling was extremely positive, but parents/ carers also gave some wonderful feedback around ways to support new families within our school. As a College, we deeply value everyone ’ s insights and believe that your feedback is essential in enhancing our educational programs and fostering a supportive learning environment. We will continue hosting parent/ carer feedback sessions across the year to gain valuable feedback on ways to better your experiences at the College. A reminder to our families who are joining us in 2026, enrolments are open for Prep. Please come into the front office and speak with Karen or Tanya about this. ATTITUDES TO SCHOOL SURVEY Over the next 4 weeks, students in Years 4, 5 and 6 will be involved in the statewide Attitudes to School Survey. This survey allows students to voice their thoughts about their teachers, our

LEARNING BEYOND THE CLASSROOM – EXCURSIONS AND INCURSIONS
Welcome back to Term 2! We hope you had a restful and enjoyable break and are ready for another exciting and productive Term of learning ahead. We are thrilled to continue building on the momentum of Term 1, with a range of opportunities for learning, growth, and connection.
Term 2 is packed with a rich variety of excursions and incursions that support and extend the teaching and learning programs across all year levels. These experiences are designed to provide real - world connections to the curriculum and build critical thinking, collaboration, and communication skills. Families are reminded to regularly check Compass for details of upcoming events. One of the highlights this Term will be the participation of a select group of students in the Model United Nations Assembly, an exciting simulation of the UN General Assembly. This event is run by the United Nations Association Australia (Victoria Division) (UNAAV), and follows official UN protocols and procedures. As Assembly delegates, our students will step into the role of UN ambassadors, representing different countries and debating key global issues. They will be challenged to negotiate, collaborate, and find solutions to the problems on the UN ’ s current agenda. This unique opportunity fosters global citizenship, critical thinking, and public speaking, and we are incredibly proud to support our students in such an enriching program.
CURRICULUM PLANNING FOR 2026 – SUBJECT SELECTION BEGINS
We are pleased to announce that our Curriculum Handbook will become available to students and families this Term. This important resource will support Years 8 - 11 students in selecting their subjects for the 2026 school year. Subject selection is an exciting time that allows students to begin shaping their educational journey in alignment with their interests, goals, and future aspirations. Students will be supported through information sessions and course counselling to ensure they make informed decisions. We encourage families to have open conversations at home about pathways, career ideas, and the subjects that spark curiosity and motivation. Staff are always available to answer questions and provide advice as we work together to support our students' success. YEAR 12 SUBJECTS: GAT AND END - OF - SEMESTER EXAMS A reminder for all students completing a Year 12 subject that they will sit the General Achievement Test (GAT) later this Term. The GAT is an essential part of the VCE assessment structure and provides important data about student achievement across a broad range of skills. Additionally, students in Years 10 to 12 will complete end - of - semester exams in various subjects. These exams help develop important study and revision habits and prepare students for the expectations of senior secondary and tertiary study. Teachers will guide students through revision strategies, exam techniques, and ways to manage time and wellbeing during the assessment period.
YEAR 7 CAMP – ADVENTURE AND LEADERSHIP
Another exciting event on the calendar is the Year 7 Camp, which promises to be a fun and memorable experience for our newest secondary students. The camp is a wonderful opportunity for Year 7s to build new friendships, challenge themselves, and develop independence in a safe and supportive environment. What makes this year ’ s camp extra special is the involvement of our Year 9 and 10 student leaders, who will attend as peer mentors and role models. These leaders have demonstrated outstanding commitment to their school community and will be supporting camp activities, team building, and student wellbeing throughout the experience.
LEADERSHIP UPDATE – WELCOME MRS SHORT
This Term, we also welcome a shift in our leadership structure, with Mrs Renee Short stepping into the role of Acting Campus Principal for the Secondary Campus. Mrs Short has a deep connection to The Lakes, having joined in the inaugural year of 2007. After completing an Associate Diploma of Business in International Trade and beginning her career in International Banking Relations, Mrs Short made the career - changing decision to follow her passion for education. Mrs Short has worked across all levels from Grade 3 to Year 12 and has been a member of The Lakes Leadership team for many consecutive years. Currently, Mrs Short serves as the Leading Teacher of Teaching and Learning on the Secondary Campus. She holds a Postgraduate Certificate in Vocational Learning, with a strong passion for both literacy and vocational education. In 2020, Mrs Short also worked as a Literacy Intervention Specialist for the Department of Education, supporting schools across the Northern Region. Her rich experience, deep commitment to student achievement, and strong ties to the College make her an exceptional leader to guide our Campus this Term. We are excited to have her in this role and look forward to the continued growth and development of our school under her leadership.
LOOKING AHEAD
Term 2 is shaping up to be full of opportunities for every student to grow academically, socially, and personally. Whether it's selecting future subjects, taking part in UN diplomacy, sitting exams, or heading out on camp, there is something valuable for every learner to engage in. As always, we thank you—our students, families, and wider community—for your ongoing support. We ’ re excited to see what we will achieve together in Term 2!

The Fundraising team continue to plan and deliver a range of activities for our school, serving the dual purpose of running events that build community and social connections, whilst raising funds for ideas that have been brought to us directly from staff and students. PARENT INFORMATION Schools | Providing Consent
Secondary School Immunisation Program
Dear Parent/Guardian,
The Public Health and Wellbeing Regulations 2019 authorise schools to release parent/carers and student information to local councils enabling councils to follow up with parents/carers after consent has been requested. This means that we will provide the City of Whittlesea with your contact details and a member of their Immunisation team may contact you if they have not received notification of consent or non - consent for immunisations for your child. Council WILL NOT contact you if you have provided a NO consent unless they require verification. If you do not wish for your details to be provided to the City of Whittlesea, please advise me in writing before close of business 28 February 2025. If you cannot contact me by the above date you will need to contact the Immunisation Administration Programs Supervisor at the City of Whittlesea on 9217 2170 if you have queries about your contact details. Immunisation is an important public health initiative. It protects individuals and communities from preventable diseases. All Victorian secondary students can receive these vaccines for free through the school - based program.
The Secondary School Immunisation Program offers free vaccines from the National Immunisation Program schedule to all eligible students in Year 7 and Year 10.
Year 7 students
Diphtheria - tetanus - pertussis (whooping cough)
•
Human papillomavirus (HPV)
•
Year 10 students:
Meningococcal vaccine
•
Local councils deliver the program and schools provide student and family information to the council, this enables families to register with Vitavo, our online immunisation registration program, and provide consent.
