Objects: A coconut, a sponge, a glass of water and a hammer. (I f a coconut is unseasonal, a watermelon may be used. In this case, substitute a knife for the hammer.) Lesson: Christ is the Living Water, and when people accept Him as Saviour, there should flow from them rivers of blessing to others. It is sad to realize that Christians do not always do this. Some are like this coconut. It has water on the inside, but it has to be broken with the hammer before the water can be used. Many people are “ coconut- Christians.” The world does not know that they have the Water o f Life until the hammer of death— or some other sorrow—has smitten them. People are often surprised when the minister at a funeral tells that the dead person had accepted Christ ten or twenty years ago. This kind of Christian is not used of God to bless others very much. Have you ever heard of the “ sponge- Christian” ? Here he is. There is water on the inside o f this dry-looking sponge, but it has to be squeezed out. This kind of Christian has to be pressed before the Living Water is revealed. Jonah had to be questioned by the men in the ship during the storm before he con fessed that he was a servant of God. Many boys and girls do not confess Christ on the school grounds until they are asked. The sponge-Christian is a poor kind of witness for Christ.

Object: A piece of paper 4 x 8 inches. (Fold in the middle, making the size 2 x 8 inches. Beneath the fold and about 2 inches from the left margin of the paper print in large letters the word “ LESS.” Leave enough of the top section to cover the “ L” in “ LESS” and the blank space to the left of the “ L.” Split this remaining top section, allow ing 2 flaps to come down over the lower section. On the one above the “ L” print “ GIVING.” Fold this down over the “ L” and print an “ M” on it. O jj the outside flap print the word “ TITHING.” Fold it down over the blank space and print the letter “ B” on it. To begin the lesson fold the “ M” forward and the “ B” backward.) S l E S S Lesson: On this piece o f paper is printed the word “ MESS.” The dic tionary says that mess means “ a state of dirt or confusion.” In the days of the prophet Malachi the people were stained by sin and were in confusion—they were in a mess. The people of that day were charged with having robbed God. In Malachi 3:8 we read, “ Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, Wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings.” Watch and see the word “ MESS” change. It now reads “ LESS” and above the word “ LESS” we see the word “ GIVING.” They had been giving less than a tithe and were charged with having robbed God. Watch the word “ LESS” and see it change again. (Fold the outside flap forward over the blank space. The word now reads “ BLESS.” This shows what God promised if His people would bring their tithes to Him. “ Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it. . . And all nations shall call you blessed: for ye shall be a delight some land, saith the Lord of hosts” (Mai. 3:10,12). There is a blessing today on those who are faithful to the Lord in bringing their tithes into His storehouse. L E S S

This clean glass of pure water is ready to give some thirsty person a refreshing drink. Some Christians are just like this glass of water. They are always ready to give the Water of Life to the thirsty. I mentioned Jonah as being like the coconut while on the ship during the storm. However, he learned his lesson, and without being pressed further, he delivered God’s message to the people of Nineveh. So well did he deliver his message that we are told, “ So the peo ple of Nineveh believed God, and pro claimed a fast and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them even to the least of them” (Jonah 3 :5 ). We, too, if we are true to God in wit nessing, will be used of God to bring others to repentance.
