Changing your name after marriage or civil partnership Although there is no legal requirement to change your name after marriage or civil partnership, many people wish to do so. Most organisations are happy to accept a copy of your marriage or civil partnership certificate in order to change your name, provided that you are changing to your partner’s surname as shown on the certificate. However, if you decide to ‘double-barrel’ your names or merge the two names together some organisations will require a Change of Name Deed.
