Arts and Theatre Take your pick of cultural excursions in Barnsley, with four theatres showing both amateur and professional performances and a host of museums and galleries. The Cooper Gallery, located almost directly opposite Barnsley College University Centre, displays work by local talents as well as world-renowned artists. Also adjacent to the campus, the Experience Barnsley Museum and Discovery Centre is free to visit and hosts interactive exhibits and centuries-old artefacts bringing the town’s history to life. Music The town’s vibrant music scene never stops, with regular gigs in many pubs and even Barnsley town centre’s very own music festival, Barnsley Live, every June. Nearby Cawthorne also hosts their annual Underneath the Stars festival, along with the award-winning Tramlines festival held in nearby Sheffield.
Shops and restaurants The town centre is brimming with well-known high street retailers including TK Maxx, Primark, JD Sports, and New Look along with small local businesses which have been part of the town’s lovable character for years. The Glass Works, Barnsley’s new shopping and leisure destination, opened in September 2021 and houses popular eateries including Fridays, Nando’s and The Botanist. But remember, you don’t have to go far for great food and drink as College is home to The Open Kitchen, Zest cafés and Starbucks offering a range of delicious options.* Sports and fitness Barnsley offers a range of sporting activities. Honeywell Sports Village offers a gym and range of exercise classes at competitive prices. Barnsley Metrodome is just a stone’s throw away from College and offers bowling, swimming and a gym. For the football fans, Barnsley FC’s Oakwell stadium is less than a mile from College.
