Athletics and activities are an important component of today’s culture. Despite a wide variety in experience, ability and background, individuals come together as a team to work towards a common goal of excellence and unity. High school interscholastic athletics and co-curricular/extracurricular activities provide an opportunity for adolescents in America. These opportunities teach participants important life lessons about teamwork, success, failure and the value of always giving their best effort. These areas are a vital component in supplementing the overall education of students. It is believed that athletics and activities are an extension of the classroom and that coaches truly are educators. We strive for our coaches to be demanding yet not demeaning; thus creating EVERYDAY CHAMPIONS! It is my intent for Shawnee Mission Northwest coaches and students to respect the game, whatever competition it may be. That respect comes by playing hard and learning the values of sportsmanship and teamwork in both victory and defeat. The “team” game is much bigger than the individual player. You always play for the name on the front, not the one on the back. We realize that our success will ultimately be measured by our unity as student athletes, coaches, administrators, students, families and fans. In approaching each athletic endeavor with the spirit of rigorous competition, we strive to maintain good sportsmanship on and off the field of play.
Coaches all are expected, and enhance the philosophy of “Cougar P.R.I.D.E.” (Positively Respecting Individuals while Demanding Excellence).
I am optimistic that the coming year at Shawnee Mission Northwest High School will be rich with exciting team accomplishments. Together we will continue to achieve excellence in athletic competition, and performances and maintain our notable reputation as outstanding men and women. I look forward to the year ahead.

We are here to play football and we will continue to honor Ovet in ways that are personal to us.
Thank you to the community for all that you have done for Ovet’s family, our SMNW community and football family.
We continue to honor and support one of our own Ovet Gomez Regaldo suffered a medical emergency and passed away on August 16. He was only 15 years old. Please help his family with additional costs by donating to the Go Fund Me account or by purchasing a specially designed t-shirt.

PLAYER FOCUS OF THE WEEK Junior Varsity Submitted by the Coaches QB, Nate Novacky is the JV player spotlight in the game against Olathe South on 10/15. Nate gets the offense going in the right direction and Monday he had a great game. He threw the ball well and made great decisions when he had to read the defense. Freshmen Vince Van Zante player of the week against Olathe South. Vince rushed for 27 yards on 2 carries and added a big time reception for 20 yards. He played solid defense from the safety position
