United Conservatory of Music June 2019

STUDENT OF THE MONTH Congratulations, Sophia! Q: How did you get started in music? A: I would hear my dad sing and started singing along with him. I joined him in the church choir when I was 5 years old and still sing at church. Q: What do you like most about the lessons? A: Every week, I learn different techniques to improve my singing. Q: What is your favorite song to sing? A: One of the songs I enjoy singing is “HALLELUJAH.” Q: Where would we be able to hear you sing? A: You can hear me sing on my channel on YouTube or my Facebook and Instagram (@sophiadealba) pages or live at church every Sunday. (St. Mary Queen of the Apostles Catholic Church) Q: What is your favorite animal and why? A: My favorite animals are DOGS, because I find it interesting how they can become your best friend so quickly.

Teacher of the Month: Greg Guerra

Q: What are the things you like most about teaching?

A: The most satisfying part about my job is the progression of an individual student. Nothing is cooler than seeing a student, who is struggling with a particular piece or exercise, finally put it together in their mind. It’s catharsis for both me and the student. Q: How do you inspire students? A: I try to play into their individual tastes and goals. If a student is interested in learning rock music, then I won’t linger too long on the classical side, as that tends to demotivate them. Q: What do you feel are the benefits of a child studying music? A: Music is really good for destressing. Students who tend to have high anxiety levels can often take comfort in music. I also have noticed increased focus. Music involves a lot of mental gymnastics and can help develop a student’s ability to multitask.

Q: What is your favorite type of music? A: I’m a big fan of folk rock.

Q: What do you like most about teaching at United Conservatory of Music? A: This is difficult to pick. So I’d have to say it’s a solid tie between my students, who are all lovely and fun to work with, and my awesome coworkers. Nothing is better about working at a place where you’re greeted with a smile and someone being happy to help you whenever you might need it. Q: What are some things most people don’t know about you? A: I consider myself a multifaceted person so there’s a lot. Particularly not many people know of my hobbies outside of music. I run a podcast broadcasting network. I collect comic books, Marvel collectibles, and “Star Wars” collectibles (I have a shelf/wall in my bedroom dedicated to each of these).
