BLEST BE THE TIE THAT BINDS Words by John Fawcett Music by Hans Nageli The writing of this song is said to have been inspired by an important event in the life of a young Baptist preacher, John Fawcett. He was pas tor of a small church in the village of Wainsgate, England, in 1772, hav ing occupied that position for seven years. He had a large family ( “my family increases faster than my in come,” he wrote). In that year, 1772, he received a call to become pastor of a large church, Carter’s Lane Chapel, in London, at a much larger salary. The call was accepted, the farewell sermon was preached, the household goods were loaded on moving-wagons, and the neighbors had come to bid farewell. Suddenly Mrs. Fawcett broke into tears. “ 0 John, I cannot bear this,” she sobbed; “ I know not how we can go!” “ Nor I either,” her husband replied; “nor will we go. Un load the wagons!” A letter was dispatched to London, declining the position, and John Fawcett remained the pastor of the small Wainsgate church for fifty years! He also similarly refused the presidency of the Baptist Academy at Bristol. There is no direct proof that this experience was the immediate cause of the writing of “ Blest Be The Tie That Binds,” but a study of the words will strongly indicate that there must have been a connection. The poem was first printed, under the title “ Brotherly Love,” in a col lection which contained 166 of Fawcett’s poems (1782). There are' two tunes now used. The earliest on e,: Boylston, was composed in 1832 by Lowell Mason. The most- used one is Dennis, which was ar ranged in 1845 by Lowell Mason from a tune which he found in Switzer land while touring Europe in 1837. Fawcett’s birthdate was January 6, 1740. At the age of sixteen he was converted under the preaching of Whitefield, and joined the Baptist church. Several years later he studied for the ministry, and became the pas tor of the Wainsgate church at 26.
