With some of the program staff in long term substance use recovery themselves, the residents say they appreciate how much time and energy the staff put into helping them achieve their goals. “They’re really passionate about what they’re doing and they’re always willing to help us,” Laura says. “They also provide a lot of the stability and encouragement that we need to get through the hard times.” Lasting impact The staff helps clients with everything from life skills instruction to making sure they get to 12-step meetings and appointments.The practical support the SOAR program provides is extraordinary, but it’s the emotional support and lifestyle changes that ultimately makes the difference. As they embark on a long journey of sustained sobriety and recovery, the SOAR program provides a critical foundation for future success and personal growth. “These women come in, they’re hurt, really torn apart, and sometimes the only thing they know is pain,” Jackson says. “We’ve had some women that go to college and get a job, and we’ve helped them in many other areas because we want them to be self-reliant when they do leave, but we don’t press them with having to leave within a certain time period.” “From the day I came in, it’s definitely been a change for the best,”Mary Jo says. “I feel very well balanced, socially, economically, financially, physically and mentally. I feel like a whole person.” 51
