P

rofessional organiza- tions are an impor- tant way to help fulfill

and best practices within their industry. Many groups offer oppor- tunities for education and learning, in the form of semi- nars, panel discussions, and lectures. Knowledge is also gleaned through discussion and sharing of information with other members. Being an active participant and work- ing alongside others in the organization also contributes to enhanced leadership skills. As a long-time member and the 2024 President of the Philadelphia Metro Chapter of the Appraisal

Institute, I have seen and experienced the benefits of a professional organization. The Chapter provides educa- tion, events, and resources to membership, and is also dedi- cated to growing the appraisal profession by hosting activities designed to introduce students to the industry. Each year the local chapter develops a day-long, Real Es- tate Trends program. Held in April, 2024 marked the 10th annual program. Speakers covering several important topics joined us for the day, providing insights and valu-

able education. The day’s program included an economic update from Kali Aloisi, Out- reach Economist of the Fed- eral Reserve Bank, a session on the present and future applications of technology and artificial intelligence, a roundup on Center City Phila- delphia, and information on tax credits, workforce housing, and CPACE funding. We were also thrilled to include students from Drexel University, Temple Univer- sity, Haverford College, and Lehigh University for part of the day. By all accounts, it

was an exciting time for them and an encouraging sign to us seasoned professionals as we look to the future. Our chapter’s parent organi- zation, the Appraisal Institute, has launched the Appraiser Diversity Initiative (ADI) in partnership with Freddie Mac, Fannie, Mae, and the National Urban League. This nationwide program is focused on attracting in- dividuals to the real es- tate appraisal industry and fostering diversity in the profession. The initiative provides education about the appraisal profession and pro- vides resources for interested individuals to utilize. One workshop of ADI was held in Philadelphia in June. The event was a success as 10 candidates applied and were interviewed that evening. Furthering the goal of bring- ing young talent to the indus- try, in August our chapter is hosting a Young Appraiser Networking Night. Local, seasoned appraisers will be in attendance to share their experiences and help expand the network of those entering the profession. Our Chapter members understand the importance of giving back, and know how critical these types of interactions and re- lationships are to growing a successful career. Engaging with other profes- sional organizations is another way to build networks and op- portunities. This fall the Phila- delphia Metro Chapter of the Appraisal Institute is teaming up with CCIM for a Site To Do Business course. The day-long event includes in-person lec- ture and hands-on exercises. The course helps satisfy con- tinuing education credits and concludes with a networking event for all attendees. Whatever the objective, tak- ing the time to be involved with a professional organiza- tion is crucial for furthering professional development, growing a business, and form- ing valuable relationships. They provide opportunities for self-improvement, as well as giving back to others and the community. Carlo L.
