Simple Pleasures of Family Life HOW WE BALANCE BUSY SCHEDULES WITH QUALITY FAMILY TIME
The summer is coming to a close, and school is about to start back up again, but the summer fun doesn’t have to come to a complete stop. Apparently, August is Family Fun Month, a reminder that we should be carving out time for family bonding even as we get back into our usual routines. My days can be hectic, but I try my best to make time for family fun whenever I can, no matter how busy I get. Today, I want to share some of my favorite ways to connect with my family (despite our varying interests and age groups) and maybe inspire some of you to shake up how you spend time with your loved ones. Family life is a jumble of schedules and interests, but despite our differences, we find that vacations are a golden opportunity for us to enjoy something together. Of course, we can’t always be on the sands of some tropical beach, so the next best thing is actually quite simple: sharing a meal. There’s something special about gathering around the dinner table, without the distractions of daily life, that brings us closer together.
This Family Fun Month, whether it’s a meal, a TV show binge, or just doing something special with each kid, I’m all about creating memories.”
in-law makes sit-down dinners mandatory whenever she visits! Home-cooked meals seem to nurture family bonds in ways that restaurant outings just can’t match. We try to have family dinners at least once a week, especially when the school year ramps up and everyone’s schedules get even crazier. Another way we come together is through our Netflix marathoning. Picking a show and binge-watching it might not encourage a lot of conversation, but it’s a shared experience that brings its own kind of closeness. We’ve gone through “Young Sheldon” as a family and are currently hooked on “The Big Bang Theory.” These shows weren’t my first choice, but you got to appease the kids! I will admit that watching them as a family has turned them into favorites. They’ve even sparked new inside jokes among us, like adopting Georgie’s Texan twangy “bye” from “Young Sheldon” as our quirky family send-off. I firmly believe that spending one-on-one time with each of my kids is just as important. With my youngest, Winn, it’s all about swimming trips to the pool, just the two of us. My daughter Claire loves reading, so our special father-daughter time often involves a trip to Barnes & Noble for a new book. And for Clayton, who’s gearing up to leave for college at Loyola University in Chicago, grabbing lunch together has been our thing. The reality that Clayton will soon be moving away has hit us hard. It’s a stark reminder of how quickly time passes and the importance of making the most of our moments together. So, this Family Fun Month, whether it’s a meal, a TV show binge, or just doing something special with each kid, I’m all about creating memories. Remember, no matter how busy life gets, there’s always time to make meaningful connections with your family. It’s these moments that build the foundation of support and love that lasts a lifetime.
The dining room table in our home has been doubling as my desk since the office is still in the works. But when we manage to clear it off and sit down together, the atmosphere changes. Conversations flow, and we really catch up on each other’s lives. While it’s a practice I wish we did more often, my mother-

PROTECT OUR LITTL
As summer’s lazy, hazy days begin to wane, the buzz of back-to-school preparations starts to fill the air. This can be a bittersweet time for kids and parents alike — excitement mixed with a touch of end-of-summer blues. To make this transition smoother and even fun, why not start a back-to- school tradition? These rituals can set a positive tone for the upcoming school year and create lasting memories for you and your children. THE BACK-TO-SCHOOL COUNTDOWN CALENDAR Who says advent calendars are only for December? Create a back-to-school countdown calendar that builds excitement as the first day of school approaches. You can fill it with small treats, inspirational quotes, or fun school supplies. Each day, your child can open a new compartment, counting down the days with a bit of surprise, making the impending school year feel like a celebration rather than a chore. SHOPPING EXTRAVAGANZA DAY Make back-to-school shopping a special event rather than a stressful errand. Dedicate a day to shop for school supplies and clothes, but do it with a twist. Perhaps end the day with a favorite meal or treat, or let your children choose a special new outfit or backpack. This makes the shopping trip more exciting and gives children something to look forward to using in the new school year!
HOW TO KEEP KIDS SAFE
As summer draws to a close and children don their backpacks for another school year, safety in school zones becomes paramount. Each year, I’ve seen
the devastating impact that accidents in these zones can have on families. It’s not just a professional concern for me; it’s a deeply personal one, especially having represented families who’ve lost children in pedestrian accidents right at the school’s doorstep.
Driving through a school zone may seem routine, but this familiarity can quickly lead to complacency among drivers. It’s crucial to shake this off and remain as diligent as ever. School zones are bustling hubs where young, often unpredictable pedestrians are likely to act impulsively. Middle schoolers, caught up in their cheerful banter, might dart across the street without looking, and smaller children might not be easily visible.
To mitigate these risks, strict rules are established in school zones: reduced speed limits, no passing, and an absolute prohibition on distracted driving, including
DECORATE THE WORKSPACE PARTY Another fun tradition is to have a “Decorate the
Workspace Party.” Before school starts, set aside a day to organize and decorate where your child will do their homework. Let them choose new items to personalize the space, such as colorful organizers, fun pens, or decorations. This gives them a sense of control and pride over their study area, which can be incredibly motivating. BACK-TO-SCHOOL BREAKFAST On the first day of school, wake up early and prepare a special breakfast. Pancakes, waffles, or even a DIY breakfast sundae bar can start the day on a high note. You can make this an annual tradition where the kids decide the menu, giving them something exciting to wake up to on a potentially nerve-wracking morning. Starting back-to-school traditions can transform the end-of- summer blues into anticipation and excitement. It’s about building joy and making memories your children will carry with them long after the school year begins.

LE PEDESTRIANS IN SCHOOL ZONES
Traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) are among the most severe outcomes of accidents and can drastically alter the course of a person’s life. We’ve seen firsthand the profound impact these injuries can have, not just immediately but for years to come. We’ll share insights into the long- term effects of TBIs and the importance of recognizing their potential in both minor and severe accidents. UNDERSTANDING TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURIES A traumatic brain injury occurs when an external force injures the brain. It can happen during vehicle collisions, falls, workplace accidents, and other instances where a sudden trauma to the head occurs. Symptoms might be immediate or develop over time, making diagnosis and treatment more complicated than other injuries. Common symptoms include headaches, confusion, dizziness, and, in more severe cases, changes in cognitive function, emotional disturbances, and physical impairments. THE HIDDEN IMPACT OF A TBI One of the most challenging aspects of dealing with TBIs is their tendency to be misdiagnosed, especially if the initial symptoms appear mild. However, even seemingly minor head injuries can lead to long-lasting problems. Cognitive issues such as memory loss, difficulty concentrating, and changes in thinking abilities are particularly common. These issues can disrupt a person’s ability to work, maintain relationships, and manage daily activities. LIFE AFTER A TBI Why Traumatic Brain Injury Cases Demand Expert Legal and Medical Attention
the use of phones. These laws are not just recommendations but critical measures designed to safeguard our children. Yet, I see drivers ignoring these rules daily — speeding, passing other cars, or glancing at their phones. As parents and community members, it’s our responsibility to adhere to these guidelines diligently. Here are a few actionable tips to ensure safety in school zones: 1. Slow Down: Always adhere to speed limits in school zones. These are often lower than other areas to allow more reaction time should a child unexpectedly run into the road. 2. Stay Alert: Avoid distractions such as mobile phones, loud music, or eating while driving through these areas. Your full attention could make all the difference. 3. Respect Crosswalks: Always stop for pedestrians at crosswalks. Children are taught to cross here, so they’re more likely to expect vehicles to stop. 4. Plan Ahead: Leave home a bit earlier during the school year. Rushing leads to speeding and risky maneuvers. 5. Educate Your Children: Teach your kids about road safety, including looking both ways before crossing and using pedestrian crossings. The thought of having to represent another family grieving a loss that could have been prevented is a burden I hope to avoid. Let’s collectively ensure our school zones are safe, giving every child a secure path to education.

LIFELONG CONSEQUENCES The long-term effects of a TBI can be debilitating. Victims may require ongoing rehabilitation services, such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, and counseling to manage their symptoms and improve life quality. Unfortunately, these treatments can be costly and may not be fully covered by insurance. LEGAL PERSPECTIVES ON TBIS From a legal standpoint, recognizing the potential for a TBI is crucial in personal injury cases. It’s our responsibility to explore the possibility of a brain injury in every accident case, no matter how minor it may initially seem. TBIs make personal injury cases more complex and typically more valuable due to the extensive medical care and life accommodations needed. Securing appropriate compensation is critical to support the long-term needs of TBI victims. If you or someone you know is experiencing symptoms of a TBI after an accident, it is crucial to seek immediate medical attention. Consulting with a knowledgeable personal injury attorney can also help protect legal rights and ensure that necessary resources are available to manage this challenging condition.
