It has been lovely to welcome students back after the half term break and hear how they enjoyed the improved weather. We know that the warm weather looks set to continue for some time and we are lucky that our school benefits from large outside space. We are reminding students to be prepared for the warmer weather and make sure that they come to school with a full water bottle to keep hydrated, which they can refill at break

and lunch. The new juice machine in the canteen has also proven incredibly popular this week. Now that our Year 11 students are completing examinations we are beginning to transition students into their new year groups. Year 10 Prefects have now been assigned leadership responsibilities throughout school. Students in Year 9 are now being supported by the KS4 Hub to build relationships with their new team of dedicated support staff. Our Year 7 students are helping Mr Greaves by writing letters to our new Year 6 students to welcome them to the school community. Yesterday our Year 12 German students visited the Goethe Institut for a Careers Roadshow helping them learn to network and understand how their language skills will support them in their professional life. Today our Year 12 Politics students are visiting the House of Parliament and the Supreme Court, bringing their learning to life. This weekend our Year 9 Duke of Edinburgh students begin their training expeditions near East Grinstead. The PTA are organising another Preloved Uniform Sale on Saturday 17 June 10-12 outside the main school. This is a great opportunity to restock before the end of term.

HEALTH AND WELLBEING

Mrs Williams, Deputy Lead for Safeguarding & Wellbeing, is a keen listener and subscriber to Dr Alex George's 'Stompcast' podcast. Dr Alex George is an A&E and TV doctor and mental health ambassador. The aim of the podcast is to encourage people to get outside and take a walk to improve their wellbeing. Each episode is split into three short sessions, designed to be listened to on three short 'stomps', or one long one where Alex and his guest will take a walk and talk about their lives. More information and links to the podcast can be found here. His book 'A Better Day' is also a really useful tool for supporting children with practical advice and activities to encourage positive mental health in young people.

A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 9

It has been a great start to the final half term here for our Year 9s. The sun has been out and all the students have been relishing the fresh air out on the field at break and lunch times. We have started our transition up to Key Stage 4 by using the hub associated with the upper school and we have been reiterating our expectations of students in terms of being great role models to those in the lower school. This week students had an assembly learning about the beginnings of the Pride movement and how there is still work to be done to ensure equality and reduce prejudice in our society. On Wednesday, 18 of our Year 9s spent the day at St Mary’s University acting as Sports Leaders for the Primary Borough Sports competition. Our leaders played an excellent role in encouraging participants and providing them with a great experience. Mrs Bashford-Hynes was in attendance at this event and she commented on just how amazing they were, saying they went above and beyond! A big well done to all the students involved for being fab representatives for Waldegrave. Congratulations to the Year 9/10 Cricket team who after winning the U15 Chance To Compete London Cricket tournament before half term have qualified for the regional finals! This weekend kicks off our Duke of Edinburgh training expeditions with almost the whole year group taking part. It should be a tremendous experience for our students. Having taken part and run the DofE program myself I am very much looking forward to seeing the students out of the school environment and revealing their true characteristics. Leaders will be made and new skills of teamwork, empathy and encouragement of others will be tested. Doubtless for many it will be a challenge both mentally and physically and I relish the opportunity to see them all build their resilience and flourish.

BOOK OF THE MONTH

Killing God by Kevin Brooks Age recommendation 14+ The book features Dawn Bundy, a fifteen year old girl whose father claims to have found God, and leaves to continue his new, alternative lifestyle. The reader is led on an adventure with Dawn, which involves the struggles of friends and classmates. Kevin Brooks somehow manages to convey how young girls may feel about their bodies - specifically body dysmorphia - and describes their discomfort in their own skin. This book - to me - is very important. Killing God highlights many modern day problems for young people. It educates people and serves as a warning. ~ Recommended by Imogen C-A, Year 9 student
