A MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF YEAR 12
This week we welcomed students back on site after the half term. I hope they all had an enjoyable and restful break as we now prepare to move forward into a rather busy final term. Over the course of three days, Art students took part and completed their Art mock exam. I actually went and saw their work on Wednesday afternoon and I have to admit I was extremely impressed with the pieces of work they produced in such a short space of time. I would really like to congratulate the students for their hard work, as well as the teachers in the Art department for their support during these three days. On Thursday, Economics students had the opportunity to hear from Ian Daniels and Ramy Soliman, who sit on the ACI UK executive committee. The talk focused on hot topic cryptocurrency, exploring its origins and uses in the real world. Also on Thursday, German students attended a Career Roadshow trip at the Goethe Institut. This is a UK-wide career roadshow offering students a multi-faced program that provides insight into the relevance of German in professional life. Students had the chance to find out which industries need applicants with German language skills as well as understanding the different opportunities there are in the world of work if you get a qualification in German. We hope that the students who attended had a great time and found it beneficial. Today our Politics students are spending the day in Central London visiting the Houses of Parliament. On this trip they will spend time at both the Parliament Education Service, where they will learn about the workings of Parliament and select Committees, and the Supreme Court. I hope they have a lovely time exploring Parliament! Over the course of next week, there are a couple of events taking place. Our Fashion and Textiles students will pay a visit to the Graduate Fashion Week, whilst our Sociology students will be invited to attend a talk after school by Dr Cullen. More details about the Sociology talk will be made available to students next week. On a final note, Year 12 have now been briefed about all possible post-18 pathways. If going to University is the appropriate post-18 pathway for a student, then they need to continue working on their UCAS application, personal statement and research of Universities. If they need any support as part of this process, they could then either speak to their form tutor, myself or Mr Bannister.

BOOK OF THE MONTH
For Whom the Bell Tolls by Ernest Hemingway The novel follows Robert Jordan, an American soldier who comes abroad to fight on the side of freedom in a war with no true heroes. Deployed to blow up a bridge in the Spanish Sierra, Jordan begins to question whether he is fighting for the right people, or if such people even exist. Produced close to the exact midpoint of his career, this novel represents the work of a master in his prime. Operating on many different levels, the book provides an accurate and harrowing description of the Spanish Civil War, a deep and intimate view into the lives of rebels, and a fast-moving, engrossing narrative. Despite the heavy subject matter, a simple and laconic writing style allows for the reader to move swiftly along without much interruption for long and gratuitous descriptions or introspection. In a sentence or two, a picture is painted of the Spanish countryside, and the men who fight for its freedom, and its destruction. With a low barrier for entry, and so much to gain, For Whom the Bell Tolls is a worthwhile read for anyone. ~ Recommended by Zach R, Year 12 student
