From Childhood Memories to Generations of Love

A Mother’s Day Reflection

Over the past five years, I’ve had the privilege of helping many of our patients improve their smile and dental health here at Newman Springs Dental Care. As a dental assistant, I get a unique opportunity to watch your smile improve as you come in for your check-ups, cleanings, and treatment. I love my career, and one of the best parts of my job is helping our patients get more comfortable at the office and excited about obtaining a healthier smile! Let’s face it — most people don’t look forward to visiting the dentist. Maybe you had a negative experience during a childhood visit or simply worried about having someone work on your mouth. Regardless of what’s giving you second thoughts about coming to the dentist, we’re here to help put those fears to rest. One of our amazing team members will stay by your side throughout your appointment to help you stay relaxed and comfortable. We’ll always smile and remind you to breathe, ensuring your appointment is as enjoyable as possible. Whether you’ve been coming to our office for years or you’re a mother bringing her children in for one of their first appointments, we’ll help make it easier on you! Speaking of mothers, in May, we get to recognize, honor, and celebrate one of the most important people in our lives during Mother’s Day. Our

mothers are often our biggest supporters and are willing to do anything to help us succeed in life. There’s simply nothing better than having someone in your life who is selfless, supportive, and present. They helped develop us into the people we are today, and their mission often doesn’t stop once we graduate high school and head into the real world. They continue to offer guidance and help throughout the duration of their lives. I’m blessed to have such a wonderful mother. She has always been there for me and has continued to offer her support well into adulthood. In recent years, I’ve had the privilege of watching my mother take on the role of grandmother for my nieces and nephews. She gave so much love to my sisters and me, and now I’m seeing her relive those moments with the next generation. Between my grandma, my mom, my sister, and now my niece, we often have four generations of women at our gatherings, which has created a lovely experience. When I was growing up, my mom would take the lead on all of our holiday get-togethers. She would cook and tidy the house, operating as a one-woman army! Now that my siblings and I are adults, our mom allows us to take on a little bit of the workload to help her out. We’ve been watching her do it all over the years, so we know exactly how to give her the most support!

One of the things my mom did that I’m most appreciative of was getting our family involved in volunteer work. We always did something at the shore or around the community to help others. We helped out with the Kiwanis Group and various organizations assisting people experiencing homelessness. I vividly remember one endeavor with the Bridges Outreach program where my mom had to drive one of the vehicles to New York City. I’m sure it was a little more stressful than she ever let on! I appreciate my mom and could never thank her enough for giving me life! Without her, my life would look drastically different.

Happy Mother’s Day to all of the hardworking moms in our community!

CHOOSE COMFORT How Sedation Dentistry Can Transform Your Next Dental Appointment

• Oral Sedation: Oral sedation involves taking a prescribed dose of sedative drug about an hour before the procedure. It produces a moderate level of sedation, where patients are awake but significantly more relaxed. • IV Sedation: Administered directly into the bloodstream, IV sedation allows the dentist to adjust the level of sedation continually. Patients may feel like they slept through the procedure — nothing beats that! The benefits extend beyond mere relaxation for patients who opt for sedation dentistry. The perception of time under sedation is altered — sometimes, hours can seem like minutes, allowing extensive procedures to be completed in what feels like a shorter period. This is particularly advantageous for those undergoing complex dental work, as it can often be completed in fewer visits. Sedation can also help control movement and gag reflexes, which benefits the patient and the dentist. Patients are more cooperative and can tolerate longer sessions, while dentists can work with greater precision. Sedation dentistry ensures that people no longer neglect dental health because of fear of the dentist. Patients can receive the care they need in a comfortable and stress-free manner. Whether you experience mild anxiety or need extensive dental work, sedation dentistry can make your visits more pleasant and less intimidating! Give us a call today for more information!

Sedation dentistry has revolutionized the way patients and dentists view dental procedures — what used to be a potentially stressful and painful experience can now be transformed into a calm and comfortable visit. For many patients, the thought of going to the dentist can create anxiety, but sedation dentistry offers a solution that alleviates fear, making dental health more accessible and less daunting. Why choose sedation dentistry? One of the main benefits of sedation dentistry is its ability to reduce anxiety. Dental anxiety is a real and serious issue that prevents many individuals from receiving regular dental care. Sedation dentistry uses medication to help patients relax during dental procedures, ranging from mild sedation for general unease to deep sedation for those with severe anxiety or for more complex procedures.

We offer 3 types of sedation. Several sedation methods cater to different needs and levels of anxiety:

Nitrous Oxide: Also known as laughing gas, this form of sedation is inhaled through a mask placed over the nose. It helps to relax patients while they remain conscious and able to communicate.

This year brings a new wave of interior design trends, transforming homes into havens of style and functionality. These trends offer a glimpse into the evolving landscape of interior design, but they’re not entirely new. Let’s explore the key trends shaping the homes of today and tomorrow. Sustainable living takes center stage. Sustainable and eco-friendly materials are gaining popularity, reflecting our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint in our living spaces. This isn’t new, as many homeowners and renters try their best to find and refurbish furniture made of recycled materials and use energy-efficient appliances and lighting. This trend continues as we embrace more sustainable designs. Biophilic design contributes to tranquil spaces. Biophilic design incorporates nature within a living space, such as putting plants in living rooms, bedrooms, and bathrooms. Integrating this and other natural elements like water features and ample natural light will help blend these spaces. The trend also includes plant-inspired textiles, e.g., pillows, curtains, upholstery, etc. These details bring tranquility and continue a tradition of melding the inside and outside without harsh boundaries. FUNCTIONAL AND SUSTAINABLE TRENDS FOR YOUR HOME IN 2024

Maximalism makes a comeback. The minimalism of the 2010s is out. Maximalism is in, which means bold and vibrant colors and eclectic decor choices are gaining momentum. More people are embracing the idea that more is more, creating visually stunning spaces that reflect their personalities and diverse interests rather than opting for a sterile, monochrome ambiance. Home offices evolve. The rise of remote work has transformed the way we use homes. In 2024, the home office continues to evolve to accommodate this work-from-home hybrid model. Versatile yet ergonomic furniture, innovative but out- of-sight storage solutions, and personalized technology integration are becoming staples, creating home environments conducive to work and everyday living. Multifunctional furniture enables flexible living. With space optimization becoming increasingly important, multifunctional furniture is gaining popularity. Homes must adapt to various needs, so why shouldn’t your furniture do the same? Sofa beds, convertible tables, and modular storage units are some popular ways to ensure your furniture is efficient and beautiful.

Dental crowns and bridges are two fundamental restorative treatments in our office that improve the function and appearance of missing or damaged teeth. Understanding these treatments can help patients make informed decisions about their options and dental health. What are dental crowns? Often referred to as a cap, a dental crown covers a damaged, decayed, or aesthetically displeasing tooth. Crowns are custom-made to fit over the entire tooth, starting at the gum line, and are primarily used to restore a tooth’s shape, size, strength, and appearance. The crown materials include porcelain, ceramic, metal alloys, composite resin, or a combination. However, porcelain and ceramic crowns are popular because they best mimic the coloration and translucency of natural teeth. What are dental bridges? Dental bridges are used to replace one or more missing teeth. A bridge consists of two or more crowns for the teeth on either side of the gap — these two or more anchoring teeth are the abutment teeth — and a false tooth/teeth in between. Like crowns, the materials used for bridges can include porcelain, ceramics, or metal alloys. Natural teeth or implants serve as the foundation for the crowns to support the bridges. The false teeth in a bridge are called pontics and can be made from gold, alloys, porcelain, or a combination. Dental bridges can help to maintain facial shape, prevent remaining teeth from drifting out of position, restore the ability to chew and speak properly, and distribute the forces in your bite properly by replacing missing teeth. Both dental crowns and bridges are effective solutions for restoring and enhancing oral functionality and aesthetics. With proper care and ideal oral hygiene practices, they will last a long time. Food History Facts That Will Amaze You

4 FASCINATING HISTORICAL FOOD FACTS

Food is central to every culture. The what, why, and hows of culinary history are diverse and fascinating. From the forgotten Roman condiment to the short-lived hot soda, there’s no end to the depth of interesting food facts. No. 1: Double-Dip Faux Pas The nobility of the Ottoman Empire followed a complex but rational code of culinary conduct. After washing with soap and water, they ate primarily with their hands. Once the meal began, they followed rules much like ours. Double dipping and lip-smacking were frowned upon, and eating more than one bite of a dish was rude, too. Luckily, meals had dozens of unique dishes. No. 2: The Lost Condiment The Romans left behind a vibrant legacy. Aqueducts are still used throughout Europe, while their language is the basis of many other languages. One thing that hasn’t stood the test of time is garum. They poured this condiment on almost everything they ate. Made from fermented

fish, garum’s salty, fishy flavor no longer appeals to the average Westerner’s palate.

No. 3: Hot Beverage Fail Dr. Pepper, like most sodas, is best enjoyed cold. This means there are fewer soda sales during the winter when people opt for comforting, warm beverages. To remedy this, the soda company tried to push hot Dr. Pepper in the 1960s. Meant to be served warm with lemon, they marketed it to magazines, television, and radio. The campaign was unsurprisingly unsuccessful. No. 4: Roaming Ramen Ramen is one of Japan’s most iconic dishes, but it doesn’t actually originate from Japan. The noodle soup comes from China, where it is known as shina soba. It became popular in Japan after World War II. The country had undergone a food shortage for years but had finally started importing supplies. Chinese food was believed to be nourishing and filling, so street vendors offering cheap but delicious

ramen became a mainstay. Once instant ramen was invented, the noodle soup became associated with Japan worldwide. Whenever you sit down for dinner, consider how you eat and the odd traditions you unconsciously observe. We’re all part of a marvelous culinary culture and should celebrate what makes us unique.
