Dental crowns and bridges are two fundamental restorative treatments in our office that improve the function and appearance of missing or damaged teeth. Understanding these treatments can help patients make informed decisions about their options and dental health. What are dental crowns? Often referred to as a cap, a dental crown covers a damaged, decayed, or aesthetically displeasing tooth. Crowns are custom-made to fit over the entire tooth, starting at the gum line, and are primarily used to restore a tooth’s shape, size, strength, and appearance. The crown materials include porcelain, ceramic, metal alloys, composite resin, or a combination. However, porcelain and ceramic crowns are popular because they best mimic the coloration and translucency of natural teeth. What are dental bridges? Dental bridges are used to replace one or more missing teeth. A bridge consists of two or more crowns for the teeth on either side of the gap — these two or more anchoring teeth are the abutment teeth — and a false tooth/teeth in between. Like crowns, the materials used for bridges can include porcelain, ceramics, or metal alloys. Natural teeth or implants serve as the foundation for the crowns to support the bridges. The false teeth in a bridge are called pontics and can be made from gold, alloys, porcelain, or a combination. Dental bridges can help to maintain facial shape, prevent remaining teeth from drifting out of position, restore the ability to chew and speak properly, and distribute the forces in your bite properly by replacing missing teeth. Both dental crowns and bridges are effective solutions for restoring and enhancing oral functionality and aesthetics. With proper care and ideal oral hygiene practices, they will last a long time.
