Contrary to popular belief, physical therapy excels in both treating and preventing sports injuries. While we commonly think about injury prevention in relation to elite athletes, the practice is equally important to recreational athletes. The body is interconnected, meaning that weakness or dysfunction in one region can create problems in other parts of the body. No athlete, elite or recreational, is immune to an occasional bout of weakness or dysfunction, and physical therapy can correct said ailments and prevent future injury. Individuals can help prevent injury, in many ways, on their own. One of the easiest places to begin injury prevention is on the training schedule. For example, when progressing running duration or distance, it is important to increase only by 10 percent per week while allowing yourself rest days.

Cold Soup Avocado and Cucumber Have a Laugh! INGREDIENTS

• ½ cup cold water • 1 clove garlic • ¾ teaspoon salt • ½ teaspoon black pepper

• Olive oil • 2 medium ripe avocados, halved • 1 large cucumber, halved • 6 stalks spring onions • 1 jalapeno • 1 lemon, juiced

DIRECTIONS

1. Preheat grill to medium-high. 2. Coat halved avocados with lemon juice to avoid browning. Brush olive oil over avocados, cucumber, spring onions, and jalapeno. Oil grill while hot.

3. Grill vegetables until everything is grilled or slightly charred. Once grilled, remove and place on platter to cool. 4. Chop grilled veggies and puree with lemon juice, cold water, garlic, salt, and black pepper. 5. Once smooth, portion soup into bowls and refrigerate to cool before serving. 6.
