Year-to-date, new orders for durable goods are up 0.5 percent Durable goods shipments also strengthened in April, rising 1.2 percent. Shipments are up 2.3 percent year-to- date. Shipments for capital goods rose 2.4 percent in April, and transportation shipments increased 3.4 percent. Federal Reserve minutes highlight rising concerns over stubborn inflation. Participants observed that while inflation had eased over the past year, there had been no further progress toward the 2 percent target in re- cent months. Recent data showed significant increases in goods and services prices, with core services inflation ex- cluding housing rising in the first quarter and core goods prices posting their first increase in several months. Sea- sonal patterns and volatile components may have contrib- uted to January’s large PCE inflation increase.. Participants discussed risks to the economic outlook, including persistent inflation, geopolitical events and un- certainties about the restrictiveness of current financial conditions. They emphasized monitoring financial system vulnerabilities and maintaining monetary policy flexibility. The federal funds rate target range was kept at 5.25–5.50 percent, with smooth balance sheet reduction. Future pol- icy decisions will be based on incoming data, the evolving outlook and risks.
