Welcome to the Fair! Dear Friends and Neighbors,
This year’s fair theme, “Wheelbarrow of Fun” celebrates the 75th anniversary of the John M. Studebaker wheelbarrow races. Hosted by the Placerville Kiwanis Club, this event is a proven crowd pleaser—we are lucky to have this unique event; not all county fairs have something that have such deep roots in their community’s history. We have made some updates this year and I am excited to share them. The Main Lawn layout will be a little different—with Budweiser Community Stage closer to the hill, providing natural seating while allowing for more activities on the lawn such as Circus Imagination, Live Stingray Encounter, plus other fun activities including “Hangtown Hammer Smash-a-Car.” American Legion is adding a Beer trailer next to the stage during evening concerts. Bands are playing on this stage all four nights, so no matter which night you choose to spend at the Fair, you will have the chance to enjoy a summer eve filled with music, laughter and dance. More fun this year includes Game Shows and YOU can be the star! Enter one of three Game Shows—“Not So Newlywed Game,”“Best Friend Challenge,” or “Father Knows Best”—See how well you really know each other. The games are hosted by our very own “Hannah not Vanna” and winners will receive $5 in “silver.” Check the daily schedule starting on page 30 for game times. Don’t want to enter? Come enjoy the challenges and laughs that these games will bring. Our Plein Air Painting competition has grown this year. Plein Air is used to describe the art of outdoor painting, capturing landscapes and views in natural light. Contestants will enjoy wine and cheese during the awards presentation. (Fruit punch will also be available.) California Highway Patrol and SamsTown Cyclery will host a Bike Rodeo near the Interactive Family Fun Zone, daily at 1pm, 3pm and 5pm. An intricate course will be set. Helmets and bikes are provided. CHP and SamsTown Cyclery will be on hand throughout the Fair to answer questions, offer tips on bike tune-ups; please stop by to say “hi.” Not everything has changed, crowd favorite Humpz & Hornz Bullfest returns on Friday night at 8pm; plan to get there early—you don’t want to miss the fast action of Mutton Bustin’ at 6:30 sponsored by Doug Veerkamp Engineering. These fearless little members of our community climb on a sheep and hold on tight hoping for their eight second ride.

You will find music playing on our many stages all day, every day— Red Hawk Stage next to the Tiki Bar; Mountain F Enterprises Stage near the Beer Tree; Budweiser Community Stage on the main lawn; and the Capital Stage beside the Capital Bar. In addition to music, Tyzen – Master Hypnotist and Magician returns; his show will leave your head spinning and your ribs hurting from laughter. Want to help local youth AND provide fresh, homegrown meat for your table? Saturday, the Junior Livestock Auction is a must attend part of Fair. Registration starts at the Livestock Barns at 9am. These kids work long and hard and it’s great watching our community come out to support them. We are looking forward to another successful auction for our future leaders! Thank you for your support. Last year, our First Annual Rubicon Jeep Jamboree Challenge was a big hit. Drivers tested their off-road skills on a track carefully set to mimic the challenges they’d face on the Rubicon Trail. I am excited that they are returning for Year Two! It’s a great family event hosted by El Dorado County Parks & Trails, Rubicon Trail Foundation and Jeepers Jamboree held in the Grandstands on Father’s Day at 2pm. The Legends of El Dorado will again return to the Budweiser Community Stage on Sunday to close out Fair. We are lucky to have many talented local legends that got “bigger than El Dorado County” coming home to play. This is my 18th year working at my hometown Fair and I am grateful to continue the tradition of family fun. Welcome to the 2019 Fair!

Live Stingray Encounter There are almost 220 known stingray species and they are related to sharks. Many are endangered mostly due to unregulated fishing. They frequent tropical and subtropical marine waters throughout the world. There are even stingrays, such as the “river stingray” and “whiptail stingray” that live in fresh water. They have a wide variety of diets, some can crush hard mollusk shells with their jaws, others will sift plankton into their mouths. This is just a bit of what you will learn about stingrays at the Stingray Encounter held on the Main Lawn behind the Budweiser Community Stage. The world’s only traveling, self-contained Stingray exhibit will educate and provide handling opportunities for young and
old every day of the Fair. Stingrays are fairly elusive creatures. Because they are flat, they can bury themselves in the sand and hide from humans. Getting up close and personal in this stingray encounter is a wonderful opportunity, as well as a learning experience for your kids. The exhibit is open each day from Noon until 10pm for viewing, touching and learning. They take a 30-minute break every few hours, so if they happen to be closed, check back soon.

Modified: A vehicle that has undergone major upgrades, whether in the drive terrain or suspension but still retains the majority of the original vehicle’s frame and body; Unlimited: any other vehicle that meets the safety requirements and is built for the intent of rock crawling/racing; UTV: any make or model of UTV or Side by Side. 2018 was the first year for this AWESOME Father’s Day event. Dads and kids, particularly those that love off-road adventures, won’t want to miss the Rubicon Jeep Jamboree Challenge. Held in the Grandstands on Sunday, June 16th at 2pm, drivers and their rigs will test their skills in three different races. The Rock Race is a timed event traveling a course designed to simulate the real obstacles one would encounter on the Rubicon Trail; the Trailer Skills Challenge, judged both on speed and the least amount of load loss, brings excitement to the grandstands. There is also a Trailer Challenge
that is not timed, the least amount of load loss takes the prize. And the loads aren’t just little piles of dirt, or an ice chest. The skills of some of these drivers is amazing to behold. There are four classes available: Stock(-ish): a vehicle that has been slightly modified while still retaining the original type of drive terrain and suspension. Suspension upgrades like long arm kids are okay as long as they are same style as OEM;

Enveloping our favorite era, the 80s, this high energy, skinny tied, greased hair and horn-rimmed glasses wearing group is guaranteed to get you up movin’ and groovin’ to the electronic sounds of the 80s. It will make you wish you were back in the 80s…. almost. Especially when they blast into a few of our favorites from artists like The Knack, Wham, Cindy Lauper, Billy Idol, and more. Get on your big hair, your skinny tie, plaid pants, and head over to the Budweiser Community Stage Friday, June 14th. Their first set begins at 9pm, and second plays at 10:30pm. Be ready to rock with the nerds!
The Spazmatics really begin in the 80s… born from a lost bet between a pupil and a professor at a high school in Thousand Oaks California. This musically challenged physics professor, the loser of the bet, had to perform the song “She Blinded Me with Science” by Thomas Dolby during halftime at a state championship basketball game. Enlisting the assistance and skills of a fellow electronics teacher who could make music generated from computers—adding guitar and bass skills of a brother and teacher’s assistant, the band was born. The professor, Kevin Stigwood, began performing a popular 80s dance called “The Belinda” with a

How to Run Away with the Circus
Circus Imagination is a second generation, family owned business. In 1985, Greg Hegwer and Criss Raintree decided to join the circus and travel around the United States bringing joy of the performance and circus to all ages of children. When the couple retired from traveling the circus life, their son Caton took on the position of Ringmaster, keeping the family tradition alive. He married costumier Carolina Raintree-Hegwer, and together they make the impromptu theater of Circus Imagination. Everything that is part of the circus was either made by Caton, sewed by Carolina, or painted by both. The bright colors of the props and costumes will leave your children starry-eyed.
Circus Imagination stars your very own kids, in their very own circus. Depending on the quantity and age of the kids, each show can have up to ten different acts, beginning with “Tina the Tight Roper,” and we need a strong man, in comes “Sandow the Strong,” but he better be careful because “Bobo the Clown” just might steal the show. Kids can “join the circus” using just their imagination and choose from a huge array of props and costumes. The seasoned Ringmaster guides them through fantasy adventures and create their own circus. Sometimes kids take these experiences and bring them home, playing “circus” in their backyard for years to come. All activities in Circus Imagination are safe; their goal is teaching and encouraging children to play in risk-free ways, away from video games and TVs to get outside and get active! Circus Imagination Shows are held on the Main Lawn, multiple times daily. Please check the schedule starting on page 30 for times. In the same place, each day of fair, between Noon and 8pm, children can experience “Clown College,”where kids of all ages can come learn basic circus talents. Featuring classes on hula hoop tricks, juggling, and tight rope (balance beam); they can also free play with giant soap bubbles, hay bale maze and stilts. When JasonWeeks isn’t performing with his group, progressive pop/rock band Juliet Company, he plays solo or as half of a duo. He’s known for his originals and covers that span all the decades from the 60s to today. Tom Kent, singer/songwriter/guitar, and Jay Cavileer, harmonica, lead the band, Kent & Cavileer with Loose Gravel playing Americana roots, rock, country and blues. Tom’s first CD, Songs around the Digital Campfire, was released in 2016. He is presently recording a follow-up, Songs from the Motherlode and Other Tales. In February 2019, two of his songs were included in the first ever Song Book of Amador and Calaveras Counties. Hipper than Hip Horn Band is comprised of some of Northern California’s finest musicians, a diverse group of seasoned professionals with musical collaborations and friendships spanning more than four decades. Amanda Fagan is an old soul in a 15-year- old’s body. Her songs reflect the depth of her thoughts, but also reflect reflect her humor. She has had one of her songs “Middle School” played on the radio. She is currently scheduled to perform at LPS Con in Las Vegas this month and will be auditioning for The Voice right after our Fair. Local Legends - Music To Your Ears
During Fair of 2015, the Legends of El Dorado debuted on the Budweiser Community Stage, and instantly became one of our Fair’s main attractions. Who are the ‘Legends’ you may ask? If you grew up in El Dorado County you have likely heard one, or all, of them play at local venues back in the day. These are highly talented entertainers that consistently drew large crowds of revelers, and some of these Legends left El Dorado County to go out and make it big,
returning to their roots to retire then play here and there. These musicians and singers were influenced by all genres of music, country, rock, pop and blue grass. The combination of their talent always makes it a performance to remember. The Legends of El Dorado will perform on the Budweiser Community Stage at 6:30pm, Sunday June 16th, Father’s Day. Bring out Dad and let him go crazy.

75 Years of WheelbarrowRacing at El Dorado
asked the group of newcomers if anyone knew how to build a wagon. The group pointed to Johnny and the blacksmith told him he’d give him a job building wagons. Johnny resisted; he came for gold! An old timer gave Johnny advice that changed his direction forever, he said that turning down a guaranteed job was crazy, thousands were striking out, thinking they would find gold but didn’t. Johnny took the job and got to work repairing tools and building wagons. The blacksmith asked Johnny if he could build a wheelbarrow and after a couple clumsy attempts, Johnny mastered the task and soon they were selling faster than hotcakes! Selling for $10 each, he was soon known as “Wheelbarrow Johnny.” John had saved quite a bit of money, but one day received a letter from his brother back home in South Bend, Indiana. They were making wagons, but couldn’t produce them fast enough, and needed more capital to purchase more materials. Johnny eventually went home where he invested his savings into his brother’s
business, H & C Studebaker. The brothers organized their business in 1868, forming Studebaker Brothers Manufacturing Company, and by 1875 it was the largest wagon builder in the world with sales annual exceeding $1,000,000. In 1092, the Studebaker Corporation produced an electric horseless carriage, followed by the gas engine auto in 1904. The head of that corporation was our “Wheelbarrow Johnny.” Back to today’s wheelbarrow races—this is an intense competition and participants train hard. The contestants traverse through various obstacles such as mud pits, railroad ties, balance beams, humps and bumps, all while carrying a heavy load in their homemade wooden wheelbarrows. There are several different races, each with a different entry fee and purse. Youth (up through 12 years old) and Teens may enter for free and the winner walks away with $100. The High School Team Race Challenge may enter for no charge, first place is $200.
This year’s Fair marks the 75th Anniversary of the John M Studebaker wheelbarrow races named after John Studebaker, more famously known as “Wheelbarrow Johnny.” The story is of a young man coming to Old Dry Diggings back in 1853 in search of gold and riches. Upon Johnny’s arrival in a wagon he built himself, a local blacksmith
