What would you enter?

If your grandmother won a blue ribbon for her apple pie and you have her recipe, there’s a good chance that award-winning recipe would still pay off. Did you enter? Do you want to see who did? You should visit the many buildings bulging with entries to see if you could do better. Years ago, needle art, painting, drawings and photographs could earn you some pin money. However, some of the livestock classes have changed. We don’t judge thoroughbred mares or stallions, carriage horses or draft horses anymore. Steer, sheep, swine and poultry have always been judged and the best hive of bees in a glass box used to win awards. The best part of fair entries, besides creating something that makes you and others happy, is that some of these skills and crafts don’t become lost with time. Sometimes old is good. At El Dorado County Fair, both old and new are embraced, and 2019 Fair is no exception. Plein Air Painting entries are pleasantly increasing. Plein Air is about leaving your

studio and experiencing painting in the landscape. Painting what you see right in front of you, not from a photo. The practice is centuries old; the French Impressionists made it into an art form. Another historical skill, preserving of foods will be carried on through the generations thanks to the UCCE Master Food Preservers. Each year prior to Fair, they hold a Junior Jams and Jellies class, teaching kids the art of preserving—then they get to enter it into the Fair. Probably one of the happiest buildings for kids is the Youth Exhibits building. This is where they get to show off their entries to their families and friends. There is nothing more exciting than seeing the pride in a child’s face when showing off their art. In the Photography, Fine Arts/Gem & Minerals Building you’ll find photos, fine art, sculptures, rare gems, plus the EDC Mineral & Gem Society is on hand to share information. Photography is one of the most popular departments to enter—and with the progress with cell phones, you have to wonder what the future will hold in this department. Today, new categories “Mobilography” and “Selfies” have been added to our Photography entries. All of the photographs are wonderful to experience, AND you also have the opportunity to place your vote for the “People’s Choice” best photo category during Fair. Stop by, enjoy the photography then vote for your favorite. Across the grounds in the Wool & Industrial Art Building you will find Industrial Arts on display, as well as

knitting, spinning and crochet. Check out the spinning demonstrations daily from 12-2pm. Immediately next door in the Home Arts Building quilts, sewing projects, table settings, the “Man Cave” and food items are on display, along with Master Food Preservers offering yummy tastings and advice, like, “Why won’t my bread rise?” and the many ways to can tomatoes. Inside the El Dorado Savings Bank Flowers and Plants Building you’ll find Commercial and Homemade Wine winners on display plus beautiful cut flowers and plants. Just outside and all over the property, you will find the Adopt-a-Spot gardens. Individuals, families, clubs, classrooms, and more can adopt a garden spot to design, plant and maintain all year long then enter in the Fair. It is fun to see how many use the fair theme to beautify their garden. Most departments have a special class for those entering the Fair using this year’s theme “Wheelbarrow of Fun” bringing some exciting and interesting entries. Look out for them and enjoy all of this year’s entries and be inspired. What are you going to enter next year?
