Betamax. “What was great about Betamax is that it had stop motion … so I kind of figured out a way it would work.” He didn’t pick up hypnotism until later. “I tested it on my schoolmates, and lo and behold I got one person hypnotized,”Paley said. “I freaked out, I didn’t know what to do!” Paley said he was able to bring his fellow student out of the induction successfully after the demonstration. From then on, he was hooked, eventually going to the OMNI Hypnosis Training Centre in Florida. Hypnotism, according to Paley, is not terribly complicated magic — it’s simply the power of suggestion. He said the trick is being able to subvert was he calls the “critical mind” in order to speak directly to the subconscious mind, which is much more creative and open to suggestion. It’s the critical mind, Paley said, that makes analytical decisions for the brain, and filters out suggestions of what to accept and what to deny. “What I do to bypass the critical mind is I activate someone’s imagination,” Paley said.

He took the moniker “Tyzen” after a friend recommended that he make his middle name sound cooler and more “zen- like” for his shows.
