The LA County Fair Goes POP! From art tomusic to innovation, 2019 edition celebrates culture from the ‘50s onward

W elcome to the 2019 LA County Fair, the place where nostalgia and relevancy are poised to, well, POP! From art to clothing to technology to toys, the Fair from Aug. 30 to Sept. 22 takes a deep dive into pop culture, with a spotlight on Los Angeles’ vibrant influence on American life. It will spotlight delights, decor and doohickeys from the 1950s to the present – recalling the introduction of frozen dinners, Elvis the Pelvis, hippies, space flight, disco, Andy Warhol, electric cars and phones made for yapping that set your toes a tappin’. “The LA County Fair, and county and state fairs in general, are a part of POP culture – so what a perfect theme for us,” said Miguel A. Santana, president and CEO of Fairplex. The Fair is always a place of innovation as well as enjoyment, Santana said, noting the first electric washing machines were sold at the first Fair in 1922, the Frisbee first soared here and young stars-to-be Toby Keith, Miranda Lambert and Rihanna played on the Fair’s stages. And to make things even more appealing, the Fair’s admission prices and the popular $6.50 value menu dropped 10 cents over 2018. Special-priced community days are planned for Los Angeles County and Inland Empire residents as well as for union members on Labor Day. Plan a stroll among giant iconic L.A. art installations on the Fair’s Hillside, a trek through memory lane from years past at Toytopia, which includes a giant Etch-A- Sketch and life-sized Monopoly game; and a visit to “POPs of Color” at the Flower & Garden Pavilion. Don’t miss the collision of technology and pop culture in “POPnology 2.0” where science fiction becomes science fact. Given LA’s constant drive for a healthy lifestyle, the Fair will hold its Fitness Fair on opening weekend. Sponsored by Walmart, it will include an obstacle course, fun run/walk, boot camp, Group-X classes, health and wellness vendors, strength competitions, Ontario Fury soccer clinics and health food options. Of course, there are the familiar Ray Cammack Shows carnival attractions as well as plenty of farm animals and an overwhelming expanse of food and shopping opportunities – in short, it’ll be “POPpin’ ” no matter where you go. The End of Summer Concert Series presented by Chevrolet will offer an array of pop-friendly entertainers, including George Lopez, Chicago and the O’Jays & the Spinners. It’ll be easy to get absorbed in the special “POP” theme.
