O ne of the special things about the LA County Fair each year is the array of exotic foods available to hungry visitors. Sure, there are plenty of hot dogs and hamburgers, but the Fair is especially known for introducing a variety of not-so-familiar foods – items that usually bring out plenty of “Wows!” from those giving them a taste test. And much of this has to with the innovation of Charlie Boghosian, better known as Chicken Charlie, who each year offers food items few have even dreamed about. “I’m always thinking of how we can outdo last year because we always need to outdo ourselves,” Boghosian said. “Ever since I invented deep-fried Oreos, the game started, and now we always need to go bigger and better every year.” Over the years, he has introduced such palate specialties as bacon-wrapped pickles, the Krispy Kreme ice cream chicken sandwich, peanut butter meatballs, a funnel cake chimichanga, the deep-fried caviar Twinkie and fried Kool-Aid.

Uncrustable – That’s a peanut butter and strawberry jam sandwich, minus the crust, that is fried and then slathered with more strawberry jam, powdered sugar and a sprinkle of Fruity Pebbles on top. • Deep-Fried Hummus – Small balls of hummus are dipped in butter and fried. These are served with a tasty tzatziki sauce. • Deep-Fried Chimichanga – This two-pound monster begins with a spinach tortilla filled with scoops of mac and cheese, strips of saucy buffalo chicken, bits of bacon and Boghosian’s own buffalo ranch sauce. The creation is deep fried, then cut in half. More buffalo ranch sauce is added, and the whole chimichanga is covered with handfuls of crushed Hot Cheetos. “It’s the best feeling ever when you know you did something that made that person stop and say ‘Wow!’ ” Boghosian explained. “The LA County Fair is one of my favorite places on Earth, and I look forward to the amazing weather and my fryers cooking all the delicious food people will be enjoying all month long.” And the good news is Chicken Charlie’s Deep-Fried Peanut Butter and Strawberry Jam Uncrustable with a 16-ounce drink is part of the Fair’s special $6.50 menu

program. His deep-fried pineapples and a drink are also on the special menu this year.

This special affordable food fare was started last year as the $6.60 menu program – in honor of the Route 66 theme – but the price has been dropped by a dime this year. Vendors throughout the Fair are offering quite a list of items on the $6.50 menu this year including the exotic POProck Texas Donut, Rainbow POP Grilled Cheese, Mexican Funnel cakes, deep-fried pecan pie and chocolate-dripped beef jerky.

Our New Location 5623 Arrow Highway, Montclair, Cal.

This year, he’s offering some pretty powerful new possibilities that are truly a mouthful:
