Adventures: Have a Smokey good time
Celebrating Excellence
Crafts, animals and learning at the America’s Great Outdoors I t’s the iconic Smokey Bear’s 75th birthday this year, and the LA County Fair has big plans to make it a memorable celebration. Smokey will be the center of attention in special events planned at the POP Music Stage at the entrance to the America’s Great Outdoors near the Hill. These events will be held on the weekends of Aug. 31-Sept. 1; September 7-8 and 21-22.
The America’s Great Outdoors area includes an authentic fire tower and a replica of a General Land Office and offers a chance to meet a live wild horse and burro from the Bureau of Land Management’s Wild Horse and Burro Program.
Visitors can learn the history of Smokey, make a craft to take home, get free tree seedlings and sign Smokey’s giant birthday card.
There is also a special area created by Tongva/Gabrielino of Southern California displaying the culture and lives of local Native Americans.
On those same dates at the new wood cabins at the Hill, there will be guest appearances of other woodland creatures, an opportunity to try some Smokey trivia and play a Smokey edition of cornhole, as well as a chance to purchase Smokey clothing and pins.
The area’s Welcome Center will have foresters, rangers and public land managers on hand who will describe ways to protect the environment. Visitors can meet with a protected desert tortoise.
